the amazing things you'll be doing
Manta ray ecotour
From AU $85 - AU $410 (1 day) ex flights. Adult/child/senior and family prices all available.
An exhilarating full day out experiencing the amazing underworld of Ningaloo Reef. See harmless sharks and turtles amongst a myriad of coral and schools of colourful fish. The main focus of the trip is to swim with manta rays and experience first hand their graceful manoeuvres in their own natural habitat. It is a breathtaking, adrenalin pumping encounter, often reported by visitors as being the highlight of their travels in Western Australia. Enjoy all for this from the shade on the bottom deck of the Kurni Ku or in the sun on the observation deck, all with comfortable padded seating. The observation deck is a feature only our boat has out of all the fleet of longer tour vessels. Morning tea, lunch and light refreshments all included. Don’t forget to ask the crew about getting your own CD capturing all the events of your day out on Ningaloo Reef.

Best time to go: All year round but depending on the wildlife customers would like to see: Humpback whales: June – September. Turtles nesting: Nov – Feb (Greensea, Loggerhead, Hawksbill).

Step aboard for a one hour coral viewing cruise. Simply view thousands of tropical fish and photograph it all in comfort through the large glass panels. With an informative and entertaining commentary on all our tours, this is one trip you won’t forget. Includes free fish feeding.

Step aboard our glass bottom boat, Nhanya-Ku for a two hour coral viewing and snorkelling tour. You will see the beautiful coral formations and exotic marine life found in Coral Bay’s inner reef on the way to two snorkelling sites. One site, ‘The Maze’ is a twisty coral-lined swim where you snorkel with thousands of fish of about 100 or so different species. You may also encounter white-tip reef sharks and turtles gracefully swimming the waters. The other site, ‘The Snapper Hole’ is where the fish line up to meet you and you can also marvel at the majestic coral formations that surround you. All snorkelling gear is provided free for you. The skipper will also give you an informative and entertaining commentary throughout and a swimming guide for the snorkels means you are well looked after both in and out of the water. Includes free fish feeding.

how this holiday makes a difference
Environment:
The vessel has a draft of only 28 cm to prevent any possibility of reef damage. Motors are state-of-the-art We do not use motorised transport to convey passengers to and from the tour.

Vessels are fitted with Yamaha outboard motors which are 3 - Star rated by the Outboard Engine Distributors Association (OEDA), and are claimed by the manufacturers to be the most environmentally benign marine motors available anywhere in the world. The 3 Star rating can only be achieved by proving to produce only ultra low emissions

All waste is minimised through packaging reduction, material re-use and recycling (where possible as there are no recycling facilities within 600kms of Coral Bay), local purchasing wherever possible to reduce transport emissions.

The enjoyable and informative commentary given during each tour provides information about marine biology, biological evolution/history, sustainability practices incorporated in our interaction with the reef, and we encourage passengers to take these and similar practices away with them.

In 2008 we underwent a NO CO2 to become the first carbon neutral tour operator in Western Australia. When this process has been formalised we will offer all customers and interested parties the opportunity to offset their travel carbon usage through our website offset program (managed by the Carbon Reduction Institute of Australia).

Community:
The Nhanya-ku is the only glass bottom boat in Coral Bay that offers universal access for able and disabled passengers.

All staff have become participants in a campaign to educate the public regarding waste disposal (especially plastics and fishing equipment) and the consequences of failing in this aspect of ecological custodianship.

In the past decade our employees have held the following volunteer positions:

  • President, Tourist Association (twice)
  • President, Progress Association
  • Member, St. John Ambulance team (since 2004)
  • Member, State Emergency Services
  • Member, Fire and Emergency Services
  • Coordinator, Turtle Monitoring Project (2007 – current)
  • Member, Turtle Monitoring Project
  • Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
