the amazing things you'll be doing
Join our small group of intrepid travelers as we explore the Canning Stock Route in outback Western Australia, known as The Loneliest 4WD Track in the World!

Let our professional Tour Guide show you the wonders of the Australian desert on this challenging 4WD adventure – you’ll be independent, but not alone!

We'll take 20 days to explore this historic cattle route and the numerous wells which have been constructed along it. We'll have time to take side trips to various points of interest (i.e. Aboriginal art, lookout points etc.) & to relax & enjoy our surroundings. We'll spend two nights in one camping area on two, or possibly three, occasions to give everyone a much-needed break and let us fully appreciate this wild and remote area.

We’ll navigate over 900 sand dunes & experience some of the toughest 4WD conditions on the planet – this tour is not for wimps! We’ll camp under clear starlit skies & as this is a self-catering tour, participants will be responsible for purchasing, storing & preparing their own meals. We’ll advise what to bring in a comprehensive Pre-Departure Kit & we’ll help you arrange self-sufficient hire vehicles with built-in mini kitchens & beds. We also run a Pre Departure Workshop for Australian residents.

A vehicle-mounted two-way radio & a robust 4WD vehicle are mandatory for this tour. No previous 4WD experience is required – tuition is part of the package. We can arrange hire of a self-contained 4WD to join this tour at special rates. Limited seating is also available for passengers.

Under no circumstances should travelers attempt to travel this track alone. It is in the heart of the desert & is remote & treacherous. There are no towns or settlements & little or no water for over 1000 lonely kms.

Best time to go?
June to September is the best time to visit this remote, outback, desert region. At other times it is too hot & can be extremely dangerous.
day-by-day itinerary
Day 1-19:Wiluna – Canning Stock Route. Please note this trip is bush camping throughout as there are no towns, hotels or motels along the way. We pass through the Gibson, Great Sandy & Tanami Deserts. Overnight camps en-route include Calvert Range, Durba Springs, Savoury Creek, Lake Disappointment, Talawana Track & Wolfe Creek
Day 20:Halls Creek
small group adventure holiday
Typically you will be sharing your experiences with between 4-20 like minded travellers (depending on the trip, operator and how many others are booked on the trip) and you'll have a group leader with you. Whether you are travelling alone or with friends its good value, and a great way to meet new people! While itineraries are pre-planned there is some flexibility and you'll have plenty of privacy. This trip will appeal to travellers of all ages who enjoy meeting new people as well as seeing new places.
how this holiday makes a difference
Environment
We maintain a safe speed to avoid damaging the track and make sure we drive with our headlights on & with a dune flag on the escort vehicle to alert any possible oncoming vehicles (there is only room for one vehicle on the track). We do not take vehicles above a certain width in order to prevent tyre tracks from going outside the existing track ‘footprint’.

We never drive on virgin sand dunes or areas of reclamation, reforestation or revegetation in this ecologically sensitive area. We emphasise environmental awareness at the pre-Departure Workshop and include a copy of our Environmental Management Policy in each Pre-Departure Kit, and demonstrate responsible environmental practices when four wheel driving, i.e., if bogged, dig the vehicle out, don’t churn up tracks, remove obstacles from the track, etc. We rehabilitate the track when required and are particularly careful in this remote area with bush toilet procedures, rubbish removals, lighting of fires etc.

We limit the number of vehicles in the convoy to minimize impact on the track and take all our rubbish out with us as there are no disposal bins in this area. We are careful to ensure clients never throw rubbish from their vehicles & include “Keep Australia Beautiful” car rubbish bags in Pre-Departure Kits. We leave our campsites neat and tidy on departure and use designated camp grounds or previously used camping areas. When making bushcamps, we encourage clients to dig their “bush toilets” at least 100m downwind from camp and at least ½ metre deep using the shovel provided, and to use biodegradable toilet paper. We provide soak pits for run-off water from showers, hand basins, dishwashing and food preparation when in bush camps.

We squash cans for easier transport & disposal and provide our own water & firewood (or other material for fires). We discourage clients from approaching, touching or feeding wild birds or animals unless instructed to do so by the Guide. The Director of the company is an Honorary Parks Ranger so is committed to protecting wildlife and looking after the environment. He is also one of the few Tour Guides in the State to be accredited by the Eco Tourism Association of Australia.

Community
We stay in campgrounds at Wiluna & Halls Creek & use local facilities, purchase groceries & fuel etc. We restock our food supplies at the Aboriginally-owned Kunawarritji shop (there are Aboriginal communities & reserves along the way but they are private & we are unable to visit them). There are almost 50 wells along this old cattle route. If these are in disrepair we stop & try to repair them. If this is not possible, we report them to the appropriate organisation when we complete the trek.

There are a few bush toilets along the route which have been constructed by volunteers. If these are in disrepair we stop & try to repair them. If this is not possible, we report them to the appropriate organisation when we complete the trek and assist other travellers whenever possible (a number of travellers get into trouble in this area, particularly if they are travelling alone). We always advise the police at our starting & completion points of our dates of departure & arrival. We conduct ‘fun fines’ & raffles while on tour to raise money for the Royal Flying Doctor Service. Last year we collected over $1000 for this worthy charity which has been of assistance to us on several occasions.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
