Wild dolphins in Rockingham, Western Australia

Western Australia
Swimming with wild dolphins in Rockingham, Western Australia. Photo by Richard Madden Operated from the town of Rockingham just 40 minutes south of Perth on the Indian Ocean, this is arguably one of the best and most eco-friendly wild dolphin experiences in the world. Safe (even for those who have never been snorkelling before), exhilarating and - assuming the dolphins show up, which they almost always do - guaranteed never-to-be-forgotten.

Rockingham Wild Encounters, and the unique wildlife experiences it offers which include encounters with penguins and sea lions, was pioneered by local boy, Terry Howson.

Over the course of a few years in the late '80s, Howson dedicated himself to the task of befriending a group of wild dolphins and later established a dolphin swim project. In doing this he established hard and fast principles that the dolphins should never be fed by humans and never taken out of their natural environment.

Currently there are around 180-200 wild dolphins in the waters off Rockingham and after a pod of dolphins has been located, visitors enter the water from the back of the boat to swim with the dolphins kitted out in wetsuits, mask and snorkel and holding on by waist belts to a dive guide equipped with an underwater scooter.
