All the profit obtained by the Community Centre is re-invested into other community projects such as the fresh produce farming project already up and running. Other projects are in the planning process such as a diner and Internet Communication and Technology Center.
We support Children in the Wilderness and Eco-Warriors, and contribute to the HIV AIDS awareness programme, Fighting Malaria programme, Hydroponic Farming Project, Sewing project, Brick-making project.
The Centre provides employment for the local community (who run the project themselves) and have been very successful at it so far with guests enjoying the experience very much. The centre provides training for workers, including housekeeping, chef training, accounting, office management, project management. A local traditional performance is shown to guests. The show is composed of a women's group all aged over 50 years. They re-enact the history of their forced removal and how they managed to get their land back and use it for conservation and tourism.
Most tourists who come and visit want to contribute something to the community. Some want to initiate a library project, others like to help out orphans, the elderly or people in ill-health. Many contributions are made to schools and clinics. A focus on conservation is taught to children at schools through the Children in the Wilderness Programme.
Tourists can volunteer their time and effort in various community activities or could come on working holidays to help build, paint or produce something worthwhile for the community. Tourists could also teach the community about health, hygiene or environmental awareness or they could teach English or computer literacy to the villagers.
This holiday is part of the responsibletravel.com and Conservation International Community Based Tourism Programme to support and promote community based tourism ventures that offer significant conservation and development benefits to local communities. We invite every traveller who books a holiday via us to send in a review. Because we don't run the holidays they're completely independent and unedited... remember to read between the lines though, as two people on the same holiday can have different views!
