Mombasa hostel accommodation in Kenya
How Mombasa hostel accommodation in Kenya makes a difference
Environment
At Wema we are working towards building a sustainable, self sufficient lifestyle for the benefit of our beneficiaries and the surrounding community. Much of our food and all of our milk is produced on our farm, water comes from our own borehole and the hostel cooker is powered from biogas produced from our waste. As part of our business development project we are contributing the drive to preserve our marine environment and provide sustainable food sources by running a freshwater tilapia fishery. We do our bit with recycling too, making use of discarded and unwanted materials to make recycled products, like our shopping bags made from used billboards which have been donated to us by the local supermarket chain. We encourage visitors to be mindful of their use of resources and help us reduce our electricity and water consumption and work together to do our bit to save our environment and our planet for generations to come.
Community
Wema are central to the life of the local community here in Mombasa, not only providing support to many needy children and families but also offering vocational training, employment and volunteering opportunities to local youth. Many of our alumni have gone on to put their past difficulties behind them, graduate from college or university and embark on successful careers. We believe strongly in the power of love to transform the lives of children through family reunification, education and psycho social support. Our partnerships provide practical support for other NGOs and community projects, for example the use of our dispensary by the local HIV prevention project and the use of our classrooms by a group setting up a local youth radio station. In addition, our work promoting the hostel and attracting visitors to this otherwise deprived part of Mombasa is of great help to many local business people, we hope you will come and stay with us and spend some time exploring not only the tourist areas but our local community too.
