How this holiday makes a difference

Environment

We keep the complex small, running it with full respect for the natural environment. We separate garbage, collect hot water from solar energy and live in close contact with the local community, who we provide work at our complex and direct our clients to for shopping and meals. Currently we are building with ecological material, which is called adobe.

- We separate our garbage: collect batteries and glass bottles, plastics and papers, etc. tot bring them to the special deposit places

- We have a battery-charger for all sizes of reusable batteries, to be used by the guests

- Vegetables and eggs which we need for the restaurant, we by from local biological farms

- We direct our clients for grocery shopping to the small local grocery shop which sells ecological products and biological food

- Food leftovers from the restaurant are either fed to the chickens or used to make compost

- We provide work for the local people (cleaning, gardening, building and general maintenance)

- We allow our old Portuguese neighbours to collect our almonds, figs and alfarroba's, which they can use or sell on the market

- Whenever our neighbours need a lift to town, doctor or hospital, we drive them. In exchange they bake us delicious bread in their wood-burning oven.

- We use ecological products for cleaning

Community

Monte Rosa contributes to the community in the following ways:

- We support the local grocery shops and little restaurants and café’s in the village by sending our guests.

- We support Portuguese economy by working contracts with local people

- We support in an ecologic way by having a system of separation for the garbage for all guests and by having all hot water supply at Monte Rosa working on solar energy.

- We buy organic products from local producers.

- We support all kinds of cultural and sport events by giving information to our guests.

- With our roundhouse for activities we offer to guests and locals all kinds of courses and workshops, like yoga, dance and personal development training.

- We give special prices for B&B for hikers who need a place to stay while walking the “Via Algarviana” (GR13)

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

We really enjoyed our family holiday in this accommodation in Portugal, they have a very professional team over there and are so accommodating and family-orientated. This was their first summer season with so many children, so they organised several children's evenings including a very entertaining treasure hunt and a couple of mini drama workshops (as they happened to have a drama teacher holidaying the same time as us!). The atmosphere was very European with Spanish, English, Dutch, German, Portuguese, French so English was the common language - great experience for children!

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Well-equipped camping facilities. No pots and pans, cutlery, etc needed - everything is provided.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Yes, we shopped in the local stores buying their local produce and we also followed the accommodation's recycling program while we were there.

4. Any other comments?

Would definitely recommend this location to a friend!!!! Our only concern is finding somewhere as good for next year's holiday. Keep up the good work.
