How this holiday makes a difference

Environment

We use solar energy for heating water. We use terra-cotta tiles to moderate the temperature and help us avoid the use of heater. We try to avoid using plastic in our property. We have a wormicompost unit for waste food items and use organic fertilizer for our garden. We encourage our guests to use paper bags and follow eco tourism principles.

Since Periyar is known for its wildlife, conservation awareness is given maximum priority. We are actively involved in the Clean Green Kumily Project, which involves awareness classes on cleanliness and planting of trees and flowering plants at the road sides. We advise our guests not to carry plastic items when they are going on forest bound activities. We have a variety of books in our reading room about the wildlife at our locality. We believe that this awareness will help our guests appreciate the importance of preserving them.

Community

So far we’ve been able to employ local villagers, a source of income for the tribal community by promoting their handicrafts and also provide livelihood for the tribal guides by encouraging our guest to participate in the forest activities. We buy raw material from local shops, hire local vehicles and also promote shops so that the benefit from tourists, is not just for us, but also for the whole village.

Helpers at the homestay are local villagers and most of the purchasing is done locally. The milk is bought from the nearby cattle farm and vegetables from home gardens. Fresh fish is bought from the tribes and mushrooms from the villagers.

The guides for the forest activities are local tribes – who where poachers trained to become forest guards instead. We encourage our guests to do the forest activities so that these forest guards have a reasonable income from the job they do. We spend a major portion of our income on local awareness programs, the Green Clean Kumily project and the Agri Horti Culture Programs.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

All the wildlife but particularly the bamboo rafting and trekking combination. Watching a great hornbill soar over the tree tops was truly magical.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Be open minded and don't automatically expect to see any wildlife! There is simply no comparison with, say, private game reserves in South Africa. There you are almost guaranteed to see creatures, but in a slightly contrived way. It is almost impossible to believe that huge elephants can become effectively invisible, but the thrill of hearing them crashing through the trees and tearing off vegetation with just a fleeting glimpse of a trunk or an ear is just fantastic. This was the Kerala experience for us and we found ourselves getting huge pleasure from looking more closely at plants, insects etc and all the tiny clues in the undergrowth that our guides pointed out.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Definitely. It was good to know that all our guides were local and all were clearly proud to be able to share their knowledge with us and seemed genuinely delighted when we enthused over our experiences. Our host family in the homestay were incredibly hospitable and nothing was too much trouble for them. The food was outstanding and our hostess even baked a beautiful iced and decorated cake for my 60th birthday which coincided with our stay. They employed a local lady to help with the cooking and clearly had a very strong relationship with those living in the adjacent tribal community. We felt very guilty that we didn't manage to go and talk to the children in the school there, but we had pre-booked such a packed schedule, we simply ran out of time.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Wonderful! We only had three nights in the Homestay but would love to return and would certainly choose it again and recommend it wholeheartedly. (Only 4 stars because 3 nights represented only a small part of our holiday overall but this accommodation itself is 5 star.)
