How this holiday makes a difference

Environment
Comfort and beauty don’t have to go out of the window in pursuit of energy efficiency and low carbon living. We want our guests to experience that it is possible to holiday in beautiful luxury whilst being sustainable and green. Powered by wind, sun, wood and water the lovingly converted former milking parlour Swallows Nest is probably the most energy efficient building in the South West. We have natural spring water and our own water treatment plants. Solar panels heat the water along with wood for our bio mass boiler and the wood stoves, with all electricity being from renewable sources.

We grow most of our own organic vegetables and source the rest of our food and services from local providers. Our guests are welcome to enjoy the gardens and grounds and take the opportunity to learn from our experiences and steep learning curve of making a life commitment to low carbon, sustainable living.

We segregate our rubbish into glass, plastics, paper and cans and are avid com-posters of anything suitable. Our washing is done using eco liquids rather than conventional washing powders. We provide our guests with eco products for their own use including organic hand made soaps, also it protects the eco systems of our waste water system.

We have created a beautiful natural oasis with water gardens, swimming pond and orchard. Over 4000 native trees have been planted and we have built organic soft fruit and vegetable plots and started a forest garden , all from an over-grown wilderness. There are 15 acres of organic pasture and a 15 acre woodland, designated as a “Devon Wild Life site”.

Community
We are actively involved in the local community, we recently started a book club, we run free economy events, we support local charities and wild life organisations. We are active in the Transition Movement and will soon be starting a group locally to strengthen resilience and sustainability in our community . We encourage our guests to stay and spend locally by informing them of any current local events, food places and the multitude of attractions to visit. Deliveries of organic food and supplies from local providers are an option on our services. During the conversion of the eco holiday cottage local craftsmen and supplies were used where possible, even the stones were sourced off our land.

Day tour/Attraction Reviews

We invite every traveller who books a holiday via us to send in a review. Because we don't run the holidays they're completely independent and unedited... remember to read between the lines though, as two people on the same holiday can have different views!
