How this holiday makes a difference
Environment
Based on a strong concept of ethical and fair trade tourism, this is a pilot project founded, managed and built by its owners with true passion for the local environment. Built with local materials, by local people, it incorporates genuine ecological awareness and social responsibilities.
Our environmentally beneficial practices include:
- Waste reduction (recycling)
- Conserving water (grey water system for watering the garden, no flush toilets, no bath)
- Conserving electricity (solar energy)
- Encouraging wildlife (land conservation and reforestation of 600 hectares)
Organic gardening practices (organic agri culture project with the community)
- Environmental cleaning products (yes)
- Building materials (only use of local material)
- Marine conservation busy with a MPA.
Community
We have a commitment to the sustainable development and construction of the multi-functional community centre, $5 per bed night and $2 per activity to Anan (community), partnerships with international and local NGOs, agriculture, horticulture and small holding projects, direct employment of 200 local people, and training of 60 locals.
We organise an authentic cultural village visit and interactions with the Macua people. The local community of Nanatha allows for a choice of informal or guided visits to the community and to the multifunctional community centre for hands-on interaction, purchase of arts & crafts to support sustainable tourism, or to join in a game of soccer with the local team.
Other practices that financially benefit the local community include:
- Local purchasing policy, we purchase our macuti, matopi, pillars, wood etc all local and with the necessary license
- Measures to encourage your guests to spend locally e.g. providing information about restaurants, activities etc
- Co-ownership of land with the local community
- Unique memorandum of understanding with the community for common benefit
- Potable, safe, fresh water supply
- Agricultural, horticultural and small holding projects
- Land and marine conservation and introduction of sustainable fishing practices
- Micro finance to small enterprises with support of local and international NGOs
