Backwaters accommodation in Alleppey, Kerala, India
How this holiday makes a difference
Environment
We use solar energy for heating water in the room and kitchen. 95% of lights used are CFL bulbs which saves on electricity. Recycling: We try to avoid using plastic in our property where possible. We encourage our guest to use paper bags and follow eco tourism principles. We have 3 large fish ponds where the food wastes are fed and all other wastes are utilized in our 10 acre farm.
Planting: We have more than 70 varieties of trees in the farm, of which more than 30 are fruit trees, which attracts lots of birds, reduces the warmness in our property providing lots of shade. We have a small vegetable farm inside the property, we do rice farming in 5 acres on traditional methods which involves using lots of man power. Only organic manure is used in the paddy as well as our vegetable farm.
Community
We are special because of the fact that we are committed to the local community. We employee local villagers, support the poor children in their education and provide indirect employment to the villagers. We buy raw material from local shops, hire local Autos, and use local man power for canoe rides for the guests.
The food we serve has always helped us in getting guests to return to us and is locally sourced. We use only fresh vegetable from the farm and fresh fish bought from the local fisherman’s. The commitment of our staff is a great strength to us.
The helpers for our farmhouse are local villagers and we also make sure most of the raw items are bought locally so that the local community benefits from our farm stay. We organize HRD programs for the school children. The guests love to go on the backwaters on small canoes which are man powered. These facilities are provided by the local oars men - thus providing a source of sustainable income for them.
