How this holiday makes a difference

Environment

Environment:
The house is made of timber frame and hemp. One of the very first hemp builds in Ireland. All made by hand on site two years ago. It is carbon neutral and is fully breathable.

Much glazing to the south captures light and heat. There is a thermal mass wall in the kitchen to trap more heat. The roof is made out of a slate which is made from recycled car parts, the windows are larch and triple glazed low e glass. The heating is by geothermal system with under floor heating and also a wood burning stove. The fuel for the stove comes from the three acres.

Many trees have been planted and there is an organic garden in the making. In time we hope to serve our own garden vegetables. Right now vegetables in season are delivered from the organic grower next door and also purchased from the great local markets. We have one in the town on Wednesday mornings and a Saturday one in a local parish hall.

For my own river valley, I am working on a long term plan to open it up with a walkway and cycle lane all along the river from the town and extending approximately seven miles, which would pass rapids and a waterfall and end at a local heritage park. This is a wonderful part of Ireland.

I have a compost heap and my own well and an organic garden in the making with beds, a willow windbreak, organic topsoil. I use eco cleaning products in the house.

Community:
Life on the rural side of town, very much a local community area with a mix of small farmers and artisans. The greater Kenmare area has a very cosmopolitan mix of people. As a community we work hard to keep the town looking good and are multi award winners at national level for the look of our town

I work as a writer and holistic therapist. I shop in local organic market and eat local fish

The town is full of award winning restaurants, there is lots of local fishing opportunities, shopping there are local jewellery designers, knitwear designers and dress designers and some great local artisan shops and clothes shops.

Walks, bikes, hikes, boat hire all locally available. I am very close to a really great heritage park and many wildlife parks.

Community

I buy at our very good WEDNESDAY LOCAL COUNTRY MARKET. Visit Olivier's pate, sewweed, smoken fish stall, Christian's Cheeses, Sabine's organic vegetables and more. I volunteer in our local Tidy Towns Association. We work on Monday nights outdoors, cleaning, clearing, painting. Kenmare is a high performer nationally as a Tidy Towns winner and annual gold medal winner. Under the Tidy Towns I have the privilege of being able to effect enhancement with design ideas such as the greening of derelict spaces in the town, landscaping disused areas and driving forward many projects. I am Secretary of the Association and I write newspaper features promoting our endeavours.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The breakfasts! Sitting in a beautiful kitchen, with enormous views of the mountains, being fed amazing food: muesli soaked in apple juice, yoghurt, fruit salad, gluten free toast, goat's cheese, smoked salmon, sun dried tomatoes, tea (black or lots of herbals, made from fresh herbs - we had meadowsweet and horsetail with a touch of mint) or coffee, freshly squeezed juice... it was fabulous!

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Give yourself plenty of time to find the place. Distances are a little longer than given, eg the road out of Kenmare seems to go on forever before take the left turn onto a 'B' road, which then becomes a track. The track part of the route also goes on a long time.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Yes. The house is very low impact, and Anne buys food from the local market.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Excellent. The location is superb - excellent for exploring the Beara Peninsula, or heading north to Iveragh Peninsula. Kenmare is a beautiful town with lots of excellent eateries and there is stunning countryside everywhere you look. We could have spent a day exploring the area around the B&B, on foot, but sadly didn't have the time.

Anne's generous spirit

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Speak to Anne re directions before you get to Kenmare

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Yes, most definitely

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Although I wouldn't use the term 'I am reborn', this was quite simply the best bed and breakfast I have ever stayed in! The location was beautiful, the house stunning, the town of Kenmare a real treat, the breakfast a whole food feast and Anne's manner is a perfect balance of trust and hospitality. I can't thank her enough. If you are heading to
the south west corner of Ireland and you are passionate about 'proper food', ecological building and great conversation then I cannot recommend this B&B highly enough.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Ann gave a warm and accommodating welcome in her beautiful home. The situation was amazing surrounded as it was by rushing rivers and misty mountains. We were delighted to be able to cook some local fish in her large kitchen and really felt at home there.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Ask Ann to meet you on the main road.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Ann used all local produce and is in the process of starting up her garden. The building of her house is a model of what can be done.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

This was an excellent place to stay to explore the beauty of south west Ireland.

Through Responsibletravel we booked a B&B for 2 nights at Kenmare, Ireland. Anne who owns the accommodation (at Gerhadiveen) was very prompt in her response to our request. On her own initiative she emailed with excellent directions to her place and also gave us suggestions for restaurants and possible walks in the area. As Anne pointed out in her write up, her B&B has only recently started receiving guests and is not a formal B&B... it is the kind that my husband and I enjoy... more like visiting someone's home. We were greeted by Anne and served tea and biscuits in her lovely and sunny living room. Breakfast was enjoyable with local jams, honey, bread, salmon, cheese, fruit etc. The room was comfortable (could have done with curtains which Anne is planning to put up in the near future) but no TV or coffee/tea making facilities etc. This was not a problem as Anne said we could use her kitchen if we needed to. The house is interesting as it is built with eco principles... hemp walls, thermal mass well etc. Also enjoyed reflexology therapy which Anne offers herself at a reasonable rate. Overall a good stay!
