How Luxury yurt accommodation in Lanzarote, Canary Islands makes a difference

Environment:
The eco yurt and all 12 properties at Finca De Arrieta are "Off the National Grid" and give guests the opportunity to experience firsthand, living with solar panels and wind turbines and using the latest renewable energy systems. We have installed the most up to date energy systems on offer, and they work very efficiently. The system in "Finca de Arrieta" is the largest on Lanzarote and runs on a 48 Volt system and has no problem powering the 12 dwellings on site. Other Green credentials include use of Grey water, Led lighting, solar pool heating, use of well water for pool, A+ class Fridge, organic fruit and veg and within walking/cycling distance to amenities.

Other environmental practices we follow:
- Waste reduction: We encourage recycling and have bins locally. Any organic waste can be given to our chickens.
- Conserving water: We ask client to be use water sparingly. We use our own well water which is used for the swimming pool, we also use our grey water on our palm trees.
- Conserving electricity: We use only Wind turbines and solar panels
- Encouraging wildlife: We have planted many native trees and bushes to encourage birds.

- Building materialsL: the entire retreat has been built using stone from the 30,000 meter estate.
- The well and water tanks which are on the land and originally used for irrigating the farm land have been fully restored.
- Measures to educate staff & guests about our environmental practices - We educate guests/staff and local schools on the eco energy system provided.
- Office practices: We have low energy lighting, and reuse paper.

Community:
Local stone and trades men have helped bring the retreat to a beautifully finished paradise. We promote rural tourism and encourage our guests to eat out locally and use local amenities such as shops and sports facilities etc..We also encourage them to purchase local products.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

So many things; Watching the sun rise every morning, star gazing at night, our toddler feeding the chickens our daily food scraps.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Certainly. The farm is off the grid, water is recycled. Alot of the food waste is given to the livestock. We shopped and ate locally. A hybrid car was provided for our stay.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

It is a wonderful place for a family holiday with small children and a great place to recharge your batteries.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Staying in a yurt on a site with over 100 chickens, various cats, rabbits and even a donkey roaming around. Great for kids with donkey rides, missions to collect eggs every day, and to hang out with other kids on the communal trampoline, pirate boat and playground.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Really relaxed atmosphere in this family-run eco business, far away from the crowds of package tourists. Definitely get the organic food box, it had the most delicious produce.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Definitely. The site employed local people. It was 100% self-sustaining, with solar power, its own well and its own sewage system. We even had little solar powered lamps for our yurts at nights!

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Fabulously relaxing, beautiful island, relaxed yet very responsive hosts. A great experience

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The rural location with an opportunity to see the landscape and vegetation. The space, both our private area around our yurt and outside where the kids were free to play on the trampoline and meet the chickens and donkey. The smallness of the resort and the uncrowded beach. The morning bike ride into the village for bread.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Yes.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

The right holiday for our family at this time.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Beautiful accommodation and right next to a lovely beach with great and unpretentious Spanish restaurants.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

The immediate surroundings of the finca are a little bleak and unpromising but once you are inside their gates it's lovely. In time that will change as planting etc matures I expect

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Definitely.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Excellent. As good as we had hoped and will go back with our children next year who will also love it!
