How this holiday makes a difference

Environment:
The resort has achieved the prestigious Green Globe Certified status under the global Certification Program. The global program that recognises the operation’s commitment to operating at the world’s highest environmental standard. Prior to achieving certification, we had successfully benchmarked against key environmental indicators including energy and water consumption, total waste production and community commitment. We recorded our data of energy and waste consumption on daily basis and keep a proper record on monthly basis.

Energy - We use 50% hydro generated energy. We minimise our energy use by turning off lights and AC if we are not using it and only turn on lights & AC 1 hour before guest arrival or any inspection schedule. We also leave appliances on standby when not in use. Pumps for swimming pools and water features run minimum hours and we use energy saving light bulbs in most of the area.

We suggest to our guests to turn off the lights in their suite/villa in the day time and keep the entrance door and bathroom door closed to save air conditioning; or their personal butler can assist them if they requested.

Water - We use water from Subak (local watering system for rice fields, from river). As we have high rainfall here it also goes back to the rivers and wells. Our main water supply here is all from wells on property. Some of our toilets have a half flush system. We ask the guests, if they wish to join our efforts, to inform their butler that they do not need their towels and linen changed daily.

Eco leaning products - All of our cleaning products are from Ecolab and are used throughout the Guest rooms, public areas and kitchen. We also use eco washing up liquid.

Garden - We minimise the usage of pesticides in the gardens. We only use them for white moth pests. We use our own compost. In our rice fields it is all organic except the water as other farmers use pesticide. We have an organic garden for herbs, salads and some vegetables, where we use clean water as well. We compost organic and garden waste on the back side area of our property by building a composting area from bamboo fence.

We are in the middle of working rice fields and the animals that live in those come into our gardens, also our swan pond attracts native birds such as herons and egrets. Bats do live in certain areas of our roof.

Recycling - We recycle paper, cans, plastic, bottle plastic, glass, and tetra paks.

Community:
Local community -
- 25 of our employees come from the local village Tengkulak, 13 from Ubud (local town). All vacancies are first informed to the village
- We do GG21 training for all of our staff and conduct meeting on monthly basis
- We use a local village dance troop for our twice weekly dance performances as well as for special events/functions
- We use musicians from the village for traditional music breakfast and dinner in the restaurant
- We make a monthly annual contribution to Tengkulak Village as well as village retribution and youth/village activities
- We use local farmers to take care of our rice fields and give contributions to every harvesting
- We buy banana fiber for candle holders from village supplier
- A lady from the village is paid to make the daily offerings (local culture) which are many around the property
- We use and pay the priest from local village for hotel temple ceremonies
- We buy local produce from a local supplier and we use 99% local vegetables
- We recommend local restaurants, good shopping and arrange local tours and excursions for our guests
- Our Engineering team are local people. For any new project we use local contractors

Charities - We have just nominated Hope Foundation as our charity to support. Which has a hope foundation clinic at Kelusa village in Payangan Ubud, which is the poorest village in Gianyar regency (our region). This clinic is dedicated to children from poor families. They give medication and provide medical checks for children every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. But the centre is open Tuesday-Sunday for the children of the village so they can come to play, read books and meet friends.

We also give charity to an orphanage house around Gianyar regency in the form of clothes and towels. They do not accept money, but will tell us their needs and we will buy. We inform our guests about the charity via their personal butler and a letter, as well as ask for an optional US $1 addition to the guests check out bill
