Environment
We built from the ground up to minimize impact on the building site and the adjoining reef and mangroves. No land filling or use of heavy equipment protected the fragile land and minimized tree cutting. We ensure sustainable operations by the use of all sewage is treated by proper septic systems, florescent lighting, recycling (aluminium, plastic drinking bottles, paper, car batteries and tires) and reusing (glass jars, other containers and any materials that seem useful) and not using dangerous chemicals. Waste food goes to local pig farmers and green waste is composted. We minimize power usage by line drying the laundry and make sure that restaurant products (take away plates, etc) are biodegradable. Kosrae usually has over 200 inches of rain a year so although water conservation is not an issue, water contamination is an issue and we ensure that our cleaning products and waste water do not contaminate the water.
We have been committed to environmental conservation since the building phase. In addition to making sure that all sewage is treated by proper septic systems, we have had an active coral monitoring program since 1996, were instrumental in the mooring buoy project (60 buoys over 43 miles of reef!), founded the local conservation NGO and other community conservation groups. Diving guests have an opportunity to join in the various award winning reef preservation projects.
Community
Guests stay in a cottage constructed in the ancient manner (with modern beds and electricity) and can totally immerse themselves in Kosraean culture. All staffs are from local villages and guests are encouraged to join in local events (the website and room literature has a lot of information about how to fit in comfortably). Events that guests regularly attend include church services, village festivals and canoe racing days, Christmas celebrations and liberation day events.
We have been committed to staff development, training local people to fill technical and professional positions, rather than hiring foreign nationals. We also ensure that we support the local community by purchasing all produce and fish from local farmers and fishermen.
