Western Australia luxury wilderness camp
How this holiday makes a difference
Environment
The wilderness camp is an environmentally sensitive, low impact, tourist destination holding strong to the cultural character of the area. A comprehensive environmental development strategy has been developed to ensures a proactive approach and provide the ability to track the outcomes of our environmental initiatives. Initiatives that have been introduced have been.
A dune management and coastal vine thicket protection – a major revegetation program has been completed and dedicated time allocated to weed control, a raised timber board walk to ensure the preservation of the dunes.
Waste management and recycling initiatives – yearly participation in the Kimberley clean – up, recycling aluminium cans and freighted back to Broome, and the usage of composted green waste.
Energy – a hybrid solar power system, with solar producing approx. 60% of the wilderness camp power supply, the introduction of energy efficient appliances.
Water conservation initiatives – the servicing of accommodation every third night, water saving shower heads.
Building design and location - design and placement of accommodation to take advantage of the ocean breezes to eliminate the need for air-cons, natural products used for construction of accommodation facilities.
Environmentally sensitive procedures – limiting numbers to that, which is considered sustainable and restricting development to improving accommodation options rather than increasing capacity.
Community
The wilderness camp is 100 percent owned by the local communities; as such all of our operations are purely centred on benefiting and respecting the local communities and their culture. These benefits include empowerment, involvement, employment and financial returns. The active leadership of the communities in all planning processes has helped ensure that the tourism venture is sensitive to community aims and aspirations. It also enables the wilderness camp to capture and reflect the essence and spirituality of the place and its people. The location of the wilderness camp provides community members the opportunity to participate in this tourism venture, whilst at the same time not compromising their wider community’s privacy and lifestyle. It is seen as a stepping stone to economic and commercial independence, a training ground for the young people and a vehicle for a greater understanding of the local aboriginality.
