How this holiday makes a difference

Community:
All building work was carried out by a local builder who lives less than 3 miles away, and a local plumber was also used. Much of the furniture in the property has been pre-loved and has a bit of history to it, including the kitchen which has been created from recycled church pews.

Where it hasn’t been possible to recycle or re-use furniture, new pieces have been sourced as locally as possible. The sofas were made by Tetrad in Preston, Lancashire, using traditional hand built craftsmanship combined with modern materials and innovative techniques. The cast-iron wood-burning stove was sourced from Hebden Bridge in Yorkshire, and guests are provided with a supply of locally harvested wood from a local young man just down the valley.

Guests are provided with freshly baked organic bread rolls and freshly baked croissants every morning during their stay which are supplied by the local village shop, along with butter, jam and cereals which are also locally sourced wherever possible. The owners are also keen to recommend local eateries for guests to try during their stay where they can sample some delicious home cooking using locally sourced, seasonal ingredients and traditional recipes.

The Bower Bank Eco-barn received recognition and support from the Sustainable Development Fund (SDF), managed by the Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust, on behalf of the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority. The SDF provides grants to individuals, businesses, local authorities and community groups to fund sustainable new business ideas and community projects which will further the two National Park purposes of:

- Conserving and enhancing the natural beauty, wildlife and cultural heritage of the Yorkshire Dales.
- Promoting opportunities for the understanding and enjoyment of the Yorkshire Dales’ special qualities by the public.

Environment:
Bower Bank Eco Barn helps to protect the environment by heating the barn and water with a ground source heat pump which is laid out under one of their fields. The extensive use of lamb's wool (locally sourced from Penrith in Cumbria), together with double glazing, works to insulate the property and help to retain the heat, making the barn very energy efficient. The appliances are as energy efficient as possible, including an A* rated cooker and fridge/freezer.

Rain water harvesting is supplemented by the barn's own fresh water spring supply which goes on to be utilised by three farms further down the course of the stream. The water passes through a ultra-violet filter (no chlorine is used), and is so tasty that guests should have no need to think of buying bottled water.
