How Lanzarote villa holiday, Fishermans Cottage, Canary Islands makes a difference

Environment

Each cottage has its own green credentials including low volt lighting, A+ class fridge/freezer, linen is changed once a week in order to save water, half flush toilets and is within walking/cycling distance to amenities. The cottage is "off the national grid" and gives guests the opportunity to experience first hand, living with solar panels using the latest renewable energy systems which work very efficiently.

We promote waste reduction by encouraging recycling and there are recycling bins locally in the village. We educate staff, guests and local schools about our environmental practices and on the solar energy system used. In our office we have low energy lighting and reuse paper.

Community

We have used local stone and tradesmen in the restoration of the cottage. We promote rural tourism to our guests and encourage them to eat out locally and use local amenities such as shops, sports facilities, restaurants and farmers markets. We offer excursions for locals to visit the cottage and see the effectiveness of the solar power system.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Arriving at Fisherman’s Cottage and seeing the wonderful location.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

It's not a holiday destination for clubbers. If you want a few days relaxation by the sea come to fisherman’s cottage.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

We shopped in the local supermarket and ate out locally. The cottage was totally solar powered with 'green' loos. So yes to both.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

10 out of 10. It was so much better than I expected. Jill and Maria were both lovely and friendly. The cottage was beautiful, the location was perfect. I will definitely be telling everyone about it, although was tempted to keep it as my secret! I will be revisiting. I only went for 2 nights but it was great. So good to get away from London and the rain for a weekend of sun, food and local wine.
