Responsible tourism: Lanzarote eco villa, Canary Islands

Environment

Finca Natura is totally off the main national grid – and instead it runs solely on renewable energy, in the form of solar power, which is generated by banks of solar panels and stored in large voltage batteries for use on demand.

We encourage all of our guests to use water as sparingly as possible as this is a very precious resource on Lanzarote, for example all WC“s provide an eco flush option and all appliances in the farmhouse are either double or triple A rated, so maximising energy efficiency.

We have planted scores of local palms and trees to encourage local bird and wild life, enabling visitors to view a variety of indigenous species, such as cranes, hoopoes and rabbits right on their doorstep.

We have also used recycled materials to renovate the property wherever possible, such as local stone, which has been used to rebuild terrace walls throughout the gardens.

Community

We have employed members of the local community only to help us restore and renovate both the farmhouse and the gardens at Finca Natura, providing employment for local residents in an area of the island where work is particularly thin on the ground.

We always go out of our way to encourage all of our guests to support local businesses, especially those in close proximity to Finca Natura such as shops, bars and restaurants – so helping to generate further income for local residents. We highlight these establishments in our guest handbook.

These guest notes also emphasise the importance of using local outdoor food markets (as opposed to supermarkets) where organic fruit and vegetables are available for sale in order to support local growers and producers.

We have an in house recycling policy and ask all of our guests to recycle their rubbish accordingly, providing bins and receptacles for this purpose.
