How this holiday makes a difference

Environment

We are situated in an area of outstanding natural beauty and the owners are committed to ensuring that every effort is made to preserve this environment and to encourage our guests to participate in this effort.

The park is the first in Wales to hold membership of Green Globe and a David Bellamy Gold Conservation Award.

Lighting: The lighting at the park is the minimum needed for your safety. Long-life bulbs are used in all the public areas and many of the low lights are solar powered. It would be appreciated if you could turn off any unnecessary lights in your caravan/chalets whenever possible.

Water: In order to conserve water, the cisterns in the WCs are fitted with water savers. Although there are hosepipes near the fire points on the park, we would be grateful if you would not use these for washing your vehicle. A bucket can be provided on request.

Wildlife: Over the years, the range of birds and animals has increased dramatically. Nest boxes are provided in discreet areas of the park and the hedgerows are left undisturbed until late summer. Squirrels, rabbits and hedgehogs are regular visitors to the play area. Children are encouraged to identify and enjoy the wildlife and there are information posters available in the laundrette. Outside the park, on the beach and in the surrounding countryside, there is also an excellent opportunity to enjoy the wildlife and again, there is information available, both in the laundrette and also in Reception.

Flowers, shrubs and trees: Wild flower seeds have been sown on the play area and near the hedgerows. Some of these have self-seeded into the flower beds and are encouraged to blend in naturally with the cultivated plants. Many of our plants and shrubs have been chosen deliberately to attract butterflies. It would be appreciated if children could be prevented from picking the flowers.

Re-cycling: All organic waste is converted into compost and fed back into the ground. There are bins near the front entrance for glass and for cans.

Community

We are now one of the few caravan parks who rent out accommodation weekly. This ensures a constant turnover of over 100 people every week. All those people use the local restaurants, shops, public houses etc. as we provide no eating facilities on the park.

All our cleaning and maintenance staff are from the village of Borth and some of them have worked with us for over 20 years. We supply each accommodation unit with an Information Sheet which lists the producers of local produce and encourage them to purchase from these and we also carry information about small attractions who cannot afford major advertising.

Story of the accommodation provider

Bob and Ann Moore have been running Northfield Holiday Park for 30 years and in that time have planted the grounds with hundreds of colourful plants and trees. This in turn has encouraged a wealth of wildlife to visit us at all times of the year. We are ideally located to provide holidays for like-minded people. We are approximately a quarter of a mile from the beach and the coastal path to Aberystwyth. Within the Dyfi Biosphere we have access to bird sanctuaries, the osprey breeding centre, the Centre for Alternative Technology and the foothills of the Plynlymon range of mountains.

We took my two grandchildren on the steam train at Aberystwyth and the excitement on the 3 year olds face was something l will always remember he was so excited.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Yes l felt that we used the local shops and facilities as well as local tourist attractions etc. The caravan site encouraged recycling and blended in beautifully with the surrounding countryside. The site was planted out beautifully and we really enjoyed our stay.

4* - The only down point was the weather could have been better at times.

We enjoyed our week's break at Borth very much. The mobile home was well equipped and the weather was brilliant - making it very pleasant to go out and about to savour the wonderful views of Cardigan Bay.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The beautiful scenery of the Dovey estuary and Cambrian coast unfolding before us every time we looked out of the window, made extra special by the amazing colours of a dry, sunny, late autumn.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Be prepared to enjoy lots of walks, the scenery, and drink in the natural beauty hidden over every hill and behind every hedge.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

I do. The park employs local people to support with the operation of the business. Locally produced food is available at the Nisa store at the bottom of the hill, which is less of a challenge to walk than at first is apparent. The use of lighting on the park is very clever, providing adequate cover from just a few lights that are on sensors. Water conservation is a priority here with dual flush toilets, and the use of instant hot water heaters ensures energy isn't wasted, and chalets are double glazed. I think there could be more use of energy efficient light-bulbs within the accommodation on site, but I really appreciated the fact that wildlife was a real priority on site, with many natural hedges and mature trees and shrubs on site.
