Responsible tourism: Saratoga Springs farmstead B&B in New York State
Before becoming a bed and breakfast, the buildings were in need of complete renovation. This gave us a blank canvas to be able to create a sustainable, eco-friendly lodge that we could then run in a very environmentally conscious way. We are the only green certified bed and breakfast in Saratoga Springs, and we are a part of the Audubon International green program. We've also been recognised as an eco-friendly place to stay by I Love New York and TripAdvisor.
We have a very organic approach to living, and manage our garden without use of chemicals or pesticides that are harmful to wildlife. We have a variety of plant life and colourful flowers that attract bees and butterflies to the garden. We hate to waste anything, and aim to reuse wherever we can to reduce this and its negative environmental impacts. We compost garden waste and use mulch around the garden. We recycle and compost household waste, and use eco-friendly and natural washing products.
We attempt to keep food miles as low as possible by sourcing fresh and seasonal products locally, and we support other environmentally conscious business such as organic farmers and eco-friendly vineyards, whose wines we buy and offer to our guests.
The B&B is not situated too far from the city of Saratoga, therefore visiting us without a car is quite simple. It's around 2 and a half miles from the center of the city, and we can be reached by taxi, on foot or by bike. If arriving in by the Amtrak train, we are happy to offer a free pick up from the station. We also offer storage for bicycles, kayaks and canoes and encourage these environmentally friendly ways of discovering the Capital-Saratoga region.
We are committed to encouraging sustainable tourism within Saratoga, so that more local people are able to benefit from visitors to the region. We will go out of our way to recommend places to visit and eat to our guests, and will call through and make reservations for them based on what they are looking for. Because there are so many fantastic independently run places within Saratoga, we're able to ensure that local people benefit from tourism, and every extra visitor is contributing to the local economy here. There is also a fantastic farmer's market- rated among the best in the country- and local bakers, dairy farmers and butchers support our efforts to reduce food miles and support local suppliers by offering to deliver to the B&B.
We work with environmental groups and offer support through donations such as a free breakfast or similar, to help with their fundraising efforts. We've also worked hard to campaign for the anti-gun lobby to support the well being of our local community and prevent gun related violence.
