Description from the accommodation owner
Umbria farmhouse bed & breakfast, Italy: the story of this holiday company
We are an English/Italian couple who met while paragliding and discovered a mutual passion for adventure and sustainable travel. After many interesting encounters around the world interacting with the real locals we decided to find a little piece of paradise ourselves in Italy and open our home to offer guests a unique and authentic experience in the best possible accommodation at an affordable price. We love the Umbrian way of life and all the activities its countryside has to offer and it gives us great pleasure to help our guests enjoy the very best stay in our stunning surroundings.
Responsible tourism: Umbria farmhouse bed & breakfast, Italy
We believe it is possible to be environmentally friendly while maintaining maximum comfort for our guests. Therefore we have strived to consider the environmental impact of our project and have observed sustainable practices where possible.
These include the use of small local businesses and tradesmen, carefully selected local materials, natural based products rather than chemicals, lime based paints and natural pigments from the local area and wood fibre and cork insulation. Original materials from the house have all been re-used in the restoration project and around our grounds. The property has an energy efficient under-floor heating and hot water system that is run from our fireplace in the winter months and solar power is also soon to be installed. We have a rain water collection tank which we use for watering the garden when required.
All our appliances, light bulbs etc have the highest energy saving ratings and our bathrooms are fitted with low flush toilets. We have an eco-septic tank and we only use environmentally friendly loo paper. Most of our fittings, fixtures and furniture are locally sourced from the surrounding area. Our beds are made by the local iron monger and much of our tableware and ceramics are from various local potters and artists.
All our suppliers are carefully selected not only for the quality of their produce but also for their impact on the environment and local community.
In the kitchen wherever possible we use home grown produce (we grow herbs, fruit and vegetables and we make all our own passata, wine, limoncello, olive oil, chestnut products and plenty more) and as a registered organic farm all our produce is free range and organic. We go to several local organic markets where produce is exchanged between local organic farmers. We also use our local shops which are all family owned. We also encourage our self catering guests to support the local shops, which they really enjoy as the produce is excellent quality and also provides a truly authentic experience and an opportunity for real interaction with the locals. Where we have to go further afield from our local shops and markets we use Umbrian suppliers to ensure our business stays within the regional economy.
For cleaning and maintenance supplies we use an organic supplier and all our products are natural and chemical free. Our bathrooms are complemented with handmade organic toiletries which we purchase from local artisans. We use environmentally friendly washing powder and fabric conditioner.
We recycle everything possible and encourage our guests to do the same.
La Cuccagna is lucky to be perfectly positioned not only for outstanding views and excellent access to most sights in Umbria but also for our small, welcoming local community where we have many friends and neighbours who we work closely with to help provide our guests with authentic experiences and activities. We send our guests on a daily basis to the wonderful restaurants nearby which are all family run and patronised by locals, offering authentic Umbrian cuisine. We also arrange vineyard tours with a local organic vineyard, weaving and ceramics painting courses run by friends and horse riding and other activities offered by neighbours. We encourage the use of local shops for provisions for self-catering guests as well as souvenirs such as handmade local textiles and edible local delicacies. Several neighbours are talented artists and craftsmen who often come to La Cuccagna to display their work for sale to guests. All our wines in our honesty bar are purchased from personal contacts in the local area.
As an organic farm we are registered with the WWOOFing association and offer WWOOFers (as well as guests) the opportunity to join us for the olive harvest. We have an ancient olive grove of 500 trees and the olive harvest is a chance to really interact with the local community, appreciate our environment and be at one with nature. We take our guests on a visit to the local family run Frantoio where they can watch the olives they have picked being pressed into delicious extra, extra virgin olive oil.
