Responsible tourism: Lake Placid lakeside hotel, New York State, USA
When you take a look out of the giant picture window in the lobby of the Golden Arrow Lakeside Resort you will understand why the Golden Arrow Lakeside Resort has pledged to operate and sustainable as possible. The Adirondack park encompasses approximately 6 million acres, nearly half of which belongs to the people of New York State and is constitutionally protected to remain "forever wild." The first step in the process to go green was deciding to take a good look at every product we were purchasing and counting it's greenness right up there with value. It's also important to look at he company you're purchasing the product from. We have SO many green practices it's hard to name them all, but some favorites are our green roof, low flow toilets and shower heads, double pained windows, CFL light bulbs, in-room recycling program, solar thermal arrays, crushed limestone beach, and sustainable dining.
The Golden Arrow is constantly donating stays at the hotel to different charitable efforts in the community. Another way that our General Manager, Jennifer Holderied, gets the Golden Arrow involved in the community is attempting to set up a Green council of local tourism officials to make Lake Placid and the Adirondacks operate more sustain-ably.
The Golden Arrow was the first hotel in the community to team up with Audubon International and get graded in their Green Lodging Program. We were the first hotel in the United States to achieve the highest rating of Platinum from them in 2009. Now only 6 properties have that rating in the U.S. and three are located in the Adirondack Park.
The Golden Arrow also has an event every year to celebrate Earth Day. This is an event that is open to the community as well as guests of the hotel. Generations Restaurant has a $2 BBQ of all local food and the hotel hosts a farmers market, free of charge to the farmers and craftsman. There is usually live music and crafts for kids as well.
