Responsible tourism: Finger Lakes bed & breakfast, New York State, USA

We have made some significant green initiatives that we have integrated into the construction of Another World. Our mission was to create an eco-friendly Canandaigua Lake B & B. We have installed a horizontal closed-loop geothermal heating and cooling system. In short this is also known as a ground source heat pump. The processes in winter and summer are different. In winter the system pulls heat from the ground, averaging around 50 - 60 degrees. In the summer, the process is reversed. The heat is drawn away from the Bed and Breakfast back into the ground, where it is absorbed. We have also installed energy Star certified appliances which is supported by high R-value insulation. To monitor the temperatures we have programmable thermostats and multiple-zoned system. The windows are low-E high-performance windows that face south. This maximizes the amount of winter sun entering the inn. The covered front porch creates an overhang that protects the home from the elements and makes it more energy efficient.

To heat the water we have a hot water tank that use 62% less energy than conventional hot water heaters. The water tank also doubles up as a dehumidifiers for the basement. The hot water holding tank is connected to a geothermal system which means the water entering the hot water tanks is already at a higher temperature furthering the efficiency of the hot water heating tanks.

Throughout the house we have energy-efficient compact florescent and LED lighting and also an eco-friendly carpet, which uses a renewable sourced fiber made from corn sugar.

It is important for the Bed and Breakfast to be as sustainable as possible because it is set in preserved woodlands so we wanted to keep the disturbance to a minimum during construction. We future proofed the area using erosion and sediment control plan that was implemented during construction. We have landscaped using indigenous, drought-tolerant plant species and limits conventional turf areas through the use of pasture grass and wildflowers. These initiatives reduce irrigation demand significantly.

The Bed and Breakfast is engineered wood joists that use half the wood of solid 2 x 10s and do not require the cutting of old-growth timber. The building materials selected are durable, low-maintenance, and long-lasting. Importantly, the materials were purchased from companies known for corporate social and environmental responsibility.

We have plans for on-going green initiatives which include installing a rotating, rack-mounted solar panel system that we hope will provide all of the inn's electricity requirements. The ultimate goal is to get our electric meter to run in reverse and to provide power to the grid.

We believe, as locavores, that it's important to buy locally grown fruits and vegetables that are in season. Our eggs, maple products, many of our meats, and a variety of other food products come from local farms. We believe buying in bulk reduces packaging materials and waste,.
During your stay, we will be glad to share our green-building learning experiences and information on the green concepts and technologies we have implemented at Another World Bed & Breakfast. Come visit, and we guarantee that you, too, will be eager to start "going green."

We will be happy to make recommendations to local companies to help you enjoy the area on foot or by bicycle. Bring or rent a canoe or kayak and go paddling on Honeoye, Conesus, Canadice or Hemlock Lakes or in the West River Marsh at the south end of Canandaigua Lake. Find peace and quiet as you float along. You may even spot a beaver, otter, or bald eagle. If you would prefer to water ski, go tubing, sailboard, boat around the lake, fish, or just party or sightsee, ski boats, bow riders, fishing boats, and pontoons these are all available for rent at local marinas. If you would like to experience the beautiful Bristol Hills on horse back we know a great local stables.

We are well connected to local companies and will be happy to make any suggestions to fulfil your needs whilst you visit Another World B and B.
