Cyprus agrotourism holiday accommodation

How this holiday makes a difference

Agrotourism helps the revitalisation of village economic activities. It gives pride to the locals and encourages them to look to preserve the traditional ways of village life, activities, traditional arts and crafts while at the same time to maintain and preserve the cultural heritage. It creates jobs for local people who are happy to work in the village while maintaining their agricultural and farming activities.

The countryside is nurtured and treated with more respect. There is a pride in the surrounding country and concentration on trying to preserve and develop natural plant and wildlife. The program contributes towards the preservation of the built and natural environment. The restoration of existing buildings and their conversion into rural tourism accommodation. We use solar energy for hot water.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

We were only here for four nights but the house was lovely and we'd have stayed longer if we'd had more time - the kitchen was very well equipped and we even a basket of fresh salad vegetables and delicious Cyprus bread - there were stone floors throughout the ground floor and big ceiling fans which kept the house cool - the whole impression was delightful, the pictures on the walls, antique cupboards in the dressing room - in the sitting room upstairs there's even a big old wooden threshing sledge embedded with flints, which brought back childhood memories from 55 years ago when these things were I’m sure still in use, but no sign of its original owner, nor his donkey!
Good deep swimming pool in the courtyard - and a sail to provide shade from the sun.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

We arranged to meet the owner on the main road into Maroni by the third sleeping policeman. Turning right into the centre, past the church the road seems to get narrower and narrower and Agia Marina Street looks an impossibly tight right turn. But its not as difficult as it looks and we rarely met anyone coming the other way!

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Yes I hope so - the craftspeople who converted it, the architect who designed it, the folk who keep it spotlessly clean - and we shopped locally. From the street you'd never think this was such a stylish little house inside, just a wooden door set into a simple stone wall with a few wooden shuttered windows.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

It was a comfortable place and in retrospect we really should have booked a longer stay - the nearest beach wasn’t anything to write home about, but it was such a short stay we didn’t spend a lot of time exploring - the pool in the courtyard was just fine. There was a bit of building work going on next door but not too obtrusive.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Most memorable bit is that cyprus is unfortunately covered in rubbish! we were up in the mountains which it seems people treat like their local tip - there were old burnt out vehicles and rusting pieces of metal work everywhere. a shame because otherwise would have been quite picturesque

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Be aware of what you're getting - cyprus is probably great for beach holidayers and clubbers but not wonderful for the outdoor sports holiday makers. the 'bike routes' on the map were often pretty much unrideable even with a moutain bike. and it's very hard to find decent mountain bikes to hire. bring your own.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Yes, it did that. we stayed in lovely accomodation - a Studio that had been done up in the traditional style. and lovely hosts.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
