How this holiday makes a difference

Environment

We are working towards sustainable tourism in many ways and are always looking for new and innovative ideas. All our fresh foods are seasonal, organic and locally grown. We are in process of establishing our own organic fruit and vegetable gardens.

The collection of rain water, from our roof, is filtered via German technology into a 40,000 gallon holding tank. This water is further filtered when pumped, on demand, into the house. It is filtered a third time for drinking and cooking purposes.

Our 25 meter pool is filled with rainwater and the pH balance, cleanliness and safety of the water are maintained by an electrolytic /saline system. Which means that the water is a mild saline solution (0.3%-0.5%) ensuring that there are no damaging chemicals to harm the environment or you!

All our toilets have a 'half flush' facility to minimise the use of clean water. To maintain this system we ask all our guests to put solid waste materials (such as tampons, etc.) in the bags provided for separate disposal and not flush them down the toilet. Hot water is provided by solar energy.

Carbon Offsetting:
Travel: We have done the maths and, in addition to our ongoing programme of tree planting, we will also plant a tree for every person who stays in order to off set the carbon footprint created by the air flight. Chose from: Nutmeg, Cocoa, Cinnamon, Allspice, Neem, Frangipani or White Cedar.

At the lodge: Our ongoing programme of tree planting also supplies our kitchen with fruit and spices. In addition we plant local trees to maintain the ecological balance of flora and fauna, and a variety of shrubs and palms which we will be using for creating bio-fuel.

Community

We have a local network of organic produce suppliers who supplement our organic garden when it is not producing sufficient quantities for our needs. We encourage them and others to work organically and sustainably on their land and in their lives. We recommend that our guests do not rent vehicles but rather use the good local transport services and tour guides when venturing out from The Lodge thereby encouraging and supporting the local community in their endeavours and enterprises. We work actively in the community to encourage sustainability and good practices for living in our fragile eco-system. This we do through networking with friends and neighbours and by giving weekly term-time talks to schools on sustainable tourism as part of the Government’s ongoing Tourism Awareness project. We also encourage our friends and neighbours to visit and tour our organic garden and grounds in order to enthuse them enough to try and incorporate sustainable and responsible land management practices into their gardens and lives. We encourage our local community to conserve and store water, plant trees for fruit bearing and for beauty, to grow more of their own food, to refrain from the common practice of burning waste organic material and rather to use it for composting.

Story of the accommodation provider

In 1999 we decided that 'life is not a dress rehearsal' and if we were going to both fulfil our dreams of living a more sustainable life style in an exotic location and sharing this with others, by offering the holiday/vacation experince that we were never as Vegans able to find, then now was the time to do it. The dream has now been a reality for 10 years. You are most welcome to come and enjoy the dream-reality with us.

Accommodation Reviews

We invite every traveller who books a holiday via us to send in a review. Because we don't run the holidays they're completely independent and unedited... remember to read between the lines though, as two people on the same holiday can have different views!
