We do not use any pesticides, just organic gardening, we try to re-use water as much as possible, we do tend to use as little electricity as possible, we use solar heated hot water, composting ... We take care of the environment by using as little plastic as possible, we seperate rubbish into plastic, glass, compost and rest. We minimize buying things as we try to re-use as much as possible, especially old materials for building and renovating our houses. We integrate as much as possible all authentic materials and use those for new purposes. We have a grey water system to use the waist water for watering the plants. We never throw away any food, we use it for lunch the next day, feed it to the goats or chicken or freeze it. We encourage our guests to use bio degradable cleaning liquids and shampoo. We organize workshops in making organic olive oil soap, to encourage people to use this instead of chemical soaps. We make our own washing machine liquid. We do not use a dishwasher to save water. We only have a washing machine for sheets and bed linen and wash all other things by hand to save water and energy. We garden organic and by permaculture principles, using raised beds, keyholes. We have no electric heating systems in rooms or apartments, only wood burners. We have wood burning hot water system for showers in the apartment and our own house. We have a wood burning stove in our own house to limit the use of gas and electricity.
We are living in a friendly way together with our portuguese neighbors. We give away the things we have loads of and use what we get from them. We try to take care of others and we work as volunteers in the abandoned dog shelter in the area. We help organizing a yearly castration project for this dog shelter. We buy the home made wine from our neighbor and help them in harvesting grapes, corn, potatoes and so on. We buy the food we need (if not from our own organic gardens) in the market in the town, to support the local farmers. We organize several workshops for people to learn ΄old fashioned΄ skills from our neighbors. We ask advice about gardening to the old people around us and we garden by using the moon calender (the old farmers use that as well). We give our guests the possibility to travel by public transport by picking them up from the bus stop in town and organizing trips for them, so they do not need to drive their own car.
