Responsible tourism: Colorado ranch stay in USA

Environment

We take a holistic approach to land management, with conservation at the forefront of all that we do. We look at the ecosystem's health from a landscape scale and narrow focus to areas of concern. Some of the land was previously used as a golf course, and we've worked to return the land to its natural state through prescriptive grazing programs.

As always, our actions are informed by our own experiences as well as perspectives from ecologists, botanists, and biologists to build on our whole-system knowledge. The rehabilitation is ongoing, but upon completion the result will be a healthier, more stable, and more productive micro-ecosystem that in turn contributes to the health of the ranch and the valley as a whole.

We encourage a conscious approach to water and energy usage, and our lodge accommodation is situated in an old and characterful building with wood burners and fireplaces for use during winter. We removed the swimming pool that had been installed as part of the golf course and required a lot of water in order to be maintained. The ranch is served by natural aqua wells and there is no mains water connection here, so we do all that we can to conserve it.

The activities available to guests are kind to the land and often involve learning more about the ecology of the ranch through interpretive hikes, bird and wildlife watching, riding and spending time working alongside the staff to get an authentic experience of life on the ranch.

Community

As well as conserving the land, we want it to be enjoyed by visitors and our neighbours too. We provide jobs for local people, which is very important in remote areas where opportunities can be limited. We have created an environment where employees can learn every day and focus on their area of interest or specialism. During the summer our workforce doubles and we are able to offer short term employment and valuable work experience to those developing a career, usually with an environmental science background. Educational tours are also hosted here and this enables us to give back to our community. We teach school children about bison, snakes and birds and how the ecosystem works.

A vacation on the ranch isn't just about staying in beautiful surroundings and trying local produce through our gourmet cuisine. The activities we promote help to preserve Colorado's ranching heritage by teaching people about life as a modern day cowboy! There is of course plenty of opportunity to chat with staff and local people and get to know the people as well as the landscape.
