Responsible tourism: Rural bed & breakfast in Portugal, Sintra region
The guest house is a part of a farm that we have been renovating since 2013. We aim to preserve the historical landscape so we are restoring antique streams and pools (rain water reservoirs for irrigating fields) the traditional way with the original local materials, maintaining the cultural landscape heritage as far as it΄s possible. The farm has a vegetable garden and an orchard where we try to replant the old fruit trees that once brought fame to this village. Once renowned "Sintra Strawberry", and long time ago disappeared, is once again at the general disposal because we planted hundreds of plants. We also have some animals (sheep, chickens and geese) that live free and are feed with our own corn and vegetables. We work in organic principles although not yet certified as Organic Producer. Engines are not allowed in the field, nor gasoline, nor mechanical tractors, just handwork and traditional tools are accepted. Almost everything that is served to guests is produced on our farm, except the fresh seafood and fish that comes from the local beach market. We are members of Slow Food International and active members of Colher para Semear, an organization that seeks to preserve traditional plants by keeping and swapping their seeds. Sustainability is an aim we look for to achieve so therefore present in day-to-day issues like: Reducing the waste of food to the minimum by using it in feeding the farms animals or turning it into compost that will afterwards nourish the gardens ground; Recycling everything the system allows (plastic, paper, glass, metal, cork, batteries); Using low-energy light bulbs and timer switches in the outside areas in order to increase energy saver.
Along with providing accommodation we aim to give our guests the opportunity of getting to know the region and the variety of experiences they can have when lodging with us. There are a lot of activities developed nearby like horse riding, surfing, tours (that can be guided), hiking, wine tastings as well as gastronomic experiences. We are highly committed with our neighbors suppliers of those activities either recommend them to our guests (we have all the contacts, programs and prices) or having common programs. If you are interested in some of the activities mentioned above please ask us for more information or even for booking it in advance. We also have a small shop in the farm where we sell our vegetables and homemade jams and preserves, along with other local artisanal products such as handicraft (ware and jewelry), wines and cheeses. They are genuine and honest products guests usually like to take home for themselves or to offer to someone special.
