How this holiday makes a difference

Environment

In order to help sustain the local environment we use water from a bore hole rather than from the mains which although connected is only used if there is a problem with our bore hole pump or the electricity fails.

In addition we use solar power to heat hot water and to cut down on the amount of energy used during our guest’s holidays. The solar panels supply enough hot water during the months of May until October when we are open to meet the needs to six people.

In addition although we have air-conditioning which is necessary in such a hot country especially in July and August we have a policy on its usage that guests must agreed to abide by. In brief we ask that when the air conditioning units are on that all windows and doors are closed and that they are switched off when a comfortable temperature is reached. We also ask that air-conditioning is switched off when guests are not in the property and not used all night. After 5 years we are also aware of a normal weeks electricity and charge guests that go over average units extra money to encourage responsible use. The allocation is very comfortable and based on the hottest months with full occupancy.

Community

We are an English, Turkish couple who work in partnership with a local family in Dikili who benefit financially from the rental of the property and all additional services that you book.

We provide a tailored itinerary for each guest to ensure you get the most out of your trip. We also recommend locally where to eat and use only local tradesmen for any work we undertake. We recommend you hire a driver rather than book a car as you will not only save money as you only book him when you need him you will also have a knowledgable guide who can provide you with information on the sites you are visiting but who is equally happy occupying himself whilst you go off and explore if you prefer.

We aim to provide an experience of Turkey that enlightens our guests to the rich history, culture and cuisine of this fascinating Country, set in an authentic environment. We supply you with a wealth of information ranging from the history of the cuisine, culture, and even tips on learning the language. We can be with you every step of the way to ensure you get the most out of your trip and offer a personal service that few can hope to match.

Story of the accommodation provider

I am an English women who worked in Turkey in the mid 1990's and met my husband there. We moved back to England, got married and had two children. We also bought a house close to where my husbands parents live in the beautiful Kozak mountains in Bergama Turkey home to ancient Pergamon which housed the famous Zeus alter. We travel to Turkey once or twice a year and like to spend lots of time immersing ourselves in the real Turkish cuture. Dikili is a place where Turkish not foreign people holiday and we wanted to share the real Turkey with other people when we were not there.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

We really enjoyed exploring the area, visiting Pergammon and other sights and trying out the restaurants in Dikili. Also the kindness and hospitality of the Turkish people we met was a lovely surprise. The villa was lovely too and everyone was very helpful. Our son enjoyed the videos and I enjoyed the novels that Sharon left there.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Its very hot in summer, so be prepared for that. Many local people don't speak English, so a phrase-book and a few words of Turkish help. Local food is great and cheap, so shop locally and eat in the restaurants. Hire car is expensive. We walked a lot and used taxi's and the local buses that stop for you.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

I hope so. We lived like local families on holiday as much as possible, buying local produce and using busses and taxi so I guess we brought money into the area.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Excellent. We would like to go back to Turkey and see more.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Finding the beaches deserted, the hotel we used almost deserted and therefore having all the facilities to ourselves, seeing the sites in Cappadocia.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Hire a car, get better road directions than we did, use turkish airlines internally - quick and cheap.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

In a way it did, as the villa owner uses people locally to clean and drive.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The most memorable part of the stay was meeting the owner's family. They were extremely charming and hospitable. The villa is beautifully furnished and there is a pretty garden and terrace where you can lose an evening enjoying a bottle of wine. Also, the surrounding coastline is striking, particularly Bademli and Candarli.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

I would recommend travellers hire a car to explore the surrounding countryside and coastline. Visit the nearby ruins of Pergamon in the early morning when it is less crowded.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

We only had a short stay, however, it did not in any way damage the environment.

4. Any other comments?

I would give the villa four stars.
