How this holiday makes a difference

The Musselburgh bed and breakfast is a grade 2 listed building, built in 1802 from local red sandstone and renovated from derelict 12 years ago by myself (with help from builders). In 2004 I replaced the roof slates with reclaimed Welsh slate, and used those discarded for a feature retaining wall which I built myself. I try wherever possible to buy locally or British made products & use local tradesmen. My latest big purchase was new carpets (2005) and underlay for the lounge and dining room from a British owned company. The underlay is made from recycled carpet and materials and the carpet is manufactured by a UK company from UK sourced wool.

Foodstuffs for the Musselburgh bed and breakfast are bought in local shops whenever possible and are again UK produce. I cater for special diets: Gluten free, Dairy free, Vegetarian, Vegan etc by arrangement.

I encourage guests to use the excellent public transport, provide a huge amount of information on local walks, storage facilities for guests with their own bikes / golf clubs (we have 25 golf clubs in East Lothian). We have bird books, wildlife guides and binoculars for guests to borrow.

I rescue and rehome whippets although I presently have 4 and do not plan to take on any more! I build my own bird boxes for the garden and have also make bat boxes which I put down by the river. I use energy saving appliances 'A' rated or with Savaplugs, energy saving lightbulbs, eco balls and non bio detergents.

I have REHIS Elementary food hygiene certificate and I am a member of the COOKSAFE foods Standards agency Scheme. I run my B&B myself and the policies that gained me the Green Tourism Businesses Scheme gold award were in place before applying and environmental awareness and responsibility are a way of life.

What makes this Musselburgh bed and breakfast different? - We are the only accommodation provider in East Lothian with a Gold GTB award; the personal care and attention to guests' needs which you do not get in a hotel; the variety of the local area, easy access to Edinburgh and the resources of East Lothian, beaches, walks, wildlife, cycleways; the latest project in house renovation is the redecoration of our guest rooms to be carried out by a local contractor.

As a member of the East Lothian Tourism Forum, I work to encourage other accommodation providers to become members of the Green Tourism Business Scheme. Binoculars and bird books available for guests use as well as advice for bird watching in the local area.
