Klek self catering accommodation in Croatia
How this holiday makes a difference
Environment
We talk and act to protect the environment, to keep it clean, to conserve water and electricity. Electric bulbs are low energy and water pressure is adjusted for both comfort and savings.
We recycle as much as possible and it isn't too easy in Croatia where environmental protection still needs to catch the attention of ordinary people. We do what we can to promote it.
In the garden we feed and shelter a family of tortoises. They moved in with us one year and ate all we had in our attempt to grow vegetables. Since then they have stayed and we feed them and tell the guests about them.
They are protected species and we are proud that they breed and multiply in safety.
We have now renovated all doors and windows and are only using local pine wood and local carpenters - quite against the trend to use plastic windows. We know it is more difficult to maintain, but think that it is a better long term solution
Tourism can be a great advantage to local communities. It provides income and gives a positive exchange of cultural values. Our approach is a total dedication to responsible tourism. All the income we make from renting goes back into the local economy in the form of taxes, salaries and local purchase of goods.
Community
We only employ local people and all revenue from sightseeing and additional services goes directly to the local people. We support local activities like ”Fisherman’s Night” the football field and beach cleaning.
We have created a comprehensive guidebook (50+ pages under constant revision) where our guests can read about local culture, history and customs and where you get introduction to the Croatian language. In the book there is also recommendations about shops and restaurants that we know are responsible and suggestions to visit activities both in Croatia and across the border - activities that directly help the local economy.
Our guests leave very satisfied and happy and this is how we get more tourists and increase business in an area where there is about 30% official unemployment. About 1% of our revenue is dedicated to the local church to help children of poor families.
Our housekeeper, Vanja Babic, is a long-time resident of Komarna. She lives with her family close to Apartment Tedo, takes good care of our guest, and makes sure that the houses are clean and in perfect condition. In addition we have a local book keeper that also helps us to keep all the laws and regulations that is a jungle in a country that is changing everything to be able to join the EU. We insist of following the law and we pay whatever it takes to be a good example.
