How this holiday makes a difference

Environment

We have always tried to protect our environment and hope to attract guests who are interested in wildlife and their surroundings. The cottages are restored stables using local timber and stone. We are conscientiously creating ponds, planting trees, feeding and monitoring birds, saving energy, saving water, recycling and using environmentally friendly products whenever possible.

Food is really important here, fresh, slowly gathered and slowly prepared. We buy locally as much as possible and as organic as possible (so produce is varied and seasonal), and are members of SLOW FOOD Herefordshire.

Herefordshire is bursting with high quality local produce, much of which can be found on our breakfast menu or in our hampers. Monkland Mousetrap cheese and Glyn-Slade Jones' chutney sausages or Tudges sausages are a must! Our welcome tea tray usually has home-made baking & fruit from the orchards and our garden is run on organic principles.

We’re Silver Award Wildlife Action and Green Business Awarded which means we’re continually striving to improve our environmental policies and actively encourage wildlife. We are aalways dding bird boxes and lace-wing houses to boost the small bird population in woodland adjacent to an orchard. A local coppice worker is working with us in September to use home grown hazel and ash to make additional arches for the cottage gardens.

Our aim is to preserve our rural heritage and share the stewardship of our farm. We’ve been involved in sustainable tourism for ten years, lecturing to Japanese groups and as part of the Eardisley village local holiday co-operative (now disbanded). We promote staying in the area to cycle, walk and ride and encourage the use of public transport.

Community

We actively encourage guests to frequent the local community businesses particularly our local farm shops and craft shops so helping small independents and boosting the local economy whilst helping some to achieve extended markets outside Herefordshire.

During Herefordshire Art week H.Art, the new Hereford Food Week, and the October Food Festival we suggest easy routes to cut down on mileage but ensure lesser known artisan producers and artists are visited. We try, through our blog to mention Things to Do really locally ie local country shows and displays, open studios and producers in order to minimise mileage whilst holidaying here in Herefordshire.

Story of the accommodation provider

Jon and I have been married for thirty years and living in the farmhouse for twenty. We are quietly working our way sympathetically through this house and garden - nodding at the fact it was built in Cromwellian times but adapting to 21st century comfort. The garden is a developing challenge especially as we live in a rain shadow from the Black Mountains. A new greenhouse and re-established vegetable and fruit garden has meant that we are moving back towards greater self-sufficiency now the children are teenagers! Come and share our fabulous spot - a recent visitor likened us to Darling Buds of May! I'm not sure - see what you think.

There were so many of the little things that had been done to make our stay perfect - it was very much appreciated....Don't think about it, just do it, you'll have a great time. My only regret is not booking for longer. (read full review)

We really appreciated the family atmosphere. It was a beautiful place and the cottage itself was lovely and well equipped. I would definitely go back and recommend to others/friends. (read full review)

We had a lovely cottage all to ourselves, including a four poster bed... Pearl cooked fantastic breakfasts with wonderful ingredients including cheese made in the local dairy with sage from Pearl's garden, organic yoghurt and fresh vegetable and fruit juices.(read full review)

To summarise, it was a lovely cottage with lovely hosts even if we did miss the turn off to it the first time! We did what was intended, which was just relaxing and pottering, and for that it was perfect. (read full review)
