How this holiday makes a difference

Environment

The resort exists in harmony with its community and the environment, providing benefits to local people and protection to the land. The resort is intentionally small-scale to avoid overburdening the land, its resources and people. Resort activities are designed to encourage an appreciation of nature, local culture and social conditions.

The resort is managed onsite by Fragrant Nature Hospitality Group but staffed by local people – made possible by in-house training. They enjoy good working conditions with fair local wages, meals while on duty and free uniform. Local people are also engaged to provide activities such as punting, cookery demonstrations, elephant rides and cultural shows.

The resort purchases goods and services locally where possible and encourages its guests to do the same. It also chooses not to run its own vehicles to leave open opportunities for local drivers. The resort is sensitively constructed to blend into the landscape with exteriors of natural materials such as stone, mud plaster, wood and coconut thatch. It is also built with energy efficiency in mind, using traditional construction techniques for insulation and cooling. The positioning of the accommodation near the lake allows breezes to provide a natural cooling effect. Resources are conserved by the use of low energy CFL lamps which have been used widely throughout the resort. Water is supplied entirely from surface wells (not bore wells) and solar panels provide heating for hot water supplies to the villas and restaurant.

The resort has an on-site waste segregation and recycling area and employs a “reduce-reuse-recycle” approach to waste management. Sewage biodegrades naturally and safely on-site by a series of localised cesspits and soakpits. Large areas of the lower ground next to the lakeside have been set aside as “wildlife gardens” to protect and preserve this beautiful feature and provide a natural home for local flora and fauna. There are wooded and shrubby areas, multiple lily ponds and a reed-bed.

Community

We are providing jobs and support to the local community. The local industries such as cashew & coir are being supported by our guests visits . We arrange visits to the local village temple shrine.

Also we do arrange traditional village cookery demonstrations. Other areas like local fishing , coconut harvesting as well are being introduced to our guests. Traditional Art forms are being performed at the Resort by local artists.

For activities, fragrant nature arranges cultural shows and visits in the local area to see Kathakali, Mohiniyattam, Bharathanatyam, Kalaripayattu and Classical Music. We can also arrange visits to see local small scale industries such as coconut processing and coir production, cashew processing and local hand-weaving. You can learn how to cook keralean food from our local house wife, (guide/interpreter provided) or go fishing on the lake with a local fisherman. Bicycles are available for hire if you want to explore the local area at close quarters. If you want to see elephants, we are near Parippally and Bhoothakulam where there are many temple elephants and during the festival season there are opportunities to see full dress processions. It is also easy to arrange elephant rides and feeding elephants locally throughout the year

Story of the accommodation provider

Venturing into the hospitality industry was an unexpected turning point in my life and career. We saw a beautiful piece of land up for sale, saw its great potential in creating a beautiful holiday experience, and there this journey began. This Project was initiated and carried forward with a lot of passion. In this role, nothing can give me more satisfaction than when I see the excitement and contentment in the faces of our guests! That is what it is all about-gifting an experience to cherish for a lifetime. Our vision is to establish Fragrant Nature as a chain of resorts and hotels and we are already in the process of identifying ideal destinations and preparing project reports. We are also considering innovative options and activities that can contribute to the whole experience.
