Sicily hotel in Milazzo

How this holiday makes a difference

We are fully integrated on the Tono beach and have a low impact on the surrounding area. The beach, a few minutes away from Milazzo town centre, is an ideal seaside resort located on the final part of the Western Riviera. Besides the crystal-clear sea and the fiery red sunsets, it offers a fascinating view of the Aeolian Islands on one side and Mount Etna on the other. The hotel has been built employing local artisans and using local materials in the furnishings of the rooms, apartments and all the communal areas. Rooms, apartments and communal areas are also decorated with local handicrafts.

Even the garden surrounding the hotel is completely made up of native species. The terraces and the room balconies offer a breathtaking panoramic view on Mount Etna and the Aeolian Islands.

A wide choice of books and magazines related to Sicilian history and culture together with a daily delivery of local and national newspapers is available in our library. Hotel guests are also provided with maps which allow them to better enjoy the surrounding natural areas and the cultural highlights Milazzo offers as well as detailed suggestions on public transport, entertainment and restaurants.

We offer bikes to reduce the use of cars. Each activity within the hotel aims at minimizing the impact on the environment. All our electric appliances are A rated; we use solar energy for hot water and heating as well as low energy bulbs; all rooms, apartments and communal areas are insulated; we have separate waste disposal; we don’t use garden chemicals and we use environmental friendly cleaning products. We periodically train our staff on how to comply with our accreditation targets and we provide customers with suggestions on how to help us save water, energy and reduce waste. We aim to offer you a holiday in a human dimension, alternating fun with culture and relaxation, far away from stressful all-inclusive tours, which less and less succeed in satisfying the demands of the responsible tourist. Our policy combines the respect of local values with a green philosophy.

In 2007, we have also sponsored:

- The Milazzo Film Festival
- A short movie on disabled people (a sort of social movie promoted by the government of Sicily region)
- A boat show held in Milazzo and focused on local boat companies production
- A painting show of a local artist held in a Milazzo art gallery
- And finally, a local table tennis team!

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The smelly trek up to the crater in Vulcano. We were rewarded with a great view of the Aelioan Islands, but couldn't enjoy it for too long due to the sulphurous fumes. Thoroughly enjoyable!

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Take advantage of the self-catering aspect of the accommodation, as there is plenty fresh, local fruit and vegetables in the shops. Don't expect too much from the beach - pebbled, fair amount of rubbish, jellyfish aplenty. It is a bit of a walk with your luggage from the town centre to the hotel. If you take the last train from Messina to Milazzo, remember to have the number of a taxi driver handy, as there is no bus service or taxis after a certain time.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Milazzo is not a tourist trap, and almost all produce were local, and therefore you would be contributing to the local economy that way. With regards to the hotel, its service was friendly and helpful. We felt that there was room for improvement with regards to its efforts to minimise the environmental impact. Our towels and sheets were changed daily despite leaving towels on the rails, and there were no obvious signs of extra measures of energy self-sufficiency.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

We travelled by train, ferry and on foot from Scotland and back, and had a relaxing week in Sicily. Enjoyable on the whole.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Climbing the cape of the 'Santuario' near the hotel, and having a breathtaking view of the Eolian islands and the entire Milazzo peninsula with its magnificent beach and castle in the background. And joining in the early evening 'passegiata' of people strolling along by the harbour- a real buzz continuing till late at night.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Go off-season. We did, in mid-September, and although it was still very hot- 34 degrees- the beach was virtually empty.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

The hotel was family-run- we got quite friendly with one of the owners and her little girl, who liked to help out in the restaurant- so was not owned by some impersonal chain. There was no air-conditioning in the public areas, instead it was designed so that the sea breeze wafted right through the building into the courtyard. All the food was locally sourced, and very good. The decor was very original, with murals and other art-works by local artists. Each room had an individually-decorated door!

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Our stay in Milazzo was only part of a longer trip to Sicily, and we enjoyed it all, but Milazzo was definitely a highlight.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The beach in front of the hotel is superb - the water is crystal clear and the views are superb.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Learn Italian! The hotel staff were really helpful and friendly, but outside the front door we found that in this part of Sicily, there was very little English spoken. This was good in a way, but make sure you have your phrase book handy!

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

All the staff were local, so yes, I think so. We ate at the local restaurants (excellent food and wine), but getting to the airport was tricky (Palermo is quite some distance). Once there, we walked most of the time.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Really good - the only minor downside is the noise from the road next to the hotel (can't hear it when the doors are shut), but the view from the balcony makes up for it.
