How this holiday makes a difference

Prior to development of the village, the area had been a working dairy farm, farmed in fact by William McNamara, the entrepreneur behind our resort. The fields had been intensively farmed for decades and the site was declared an ‘ecological desert’ by ecologists from Cardiff University, ie there were no animals or ecosystems of special interest in the development area. This meant there was an opportunity to develop something new and exciting on the land, and in the process, encourage and attract a much wider variety of wildlife and wildflower flora and fauna to the site.

Ultimately, we will attract 100,000 visitors a year, employ over 700 people – making it one of the largest private sector employers in the county – and inject around £35 million into the local economy each year.

We work within an Environmental Management System, which means we have identified all areas of our business and operations that could impact on the environment and have put in place a series of controls to ensure we prevent pollution, continually improve and are legally compliant with all Environmental Legislation. Some of our improvement plan objectives for 2008/9 include;

- Implementation of an ongoing waste management strategy to minimise, recover and recycle waste
- Implementing a full energy management programme to monitor and minimise energy consumption ongoing and minimise direct and indirect carbon emissions
- Using a biomass energy source to heat the Blue Lagoon and Landsker Sports Club
- Implementation of an approved Travel Plan
- Managing and encouraging biodiversity across the site in partnership with the Wildlife Trust of South and West Wales
- Sourcing over 90% of food from local Pembrokeshire and Carmarthenshire based suppliers
- Using only reusable or recyclable packaging for all our products sold on site.

We have our own Waste Water Treatment Plant, a cutting edge biological treatment system that represents a serious investment to ensure the resulting water quality meets the high standards required by the Environment Agency and other local bodies such as Countryside Council for Wales (CCW).

The woodland next to the site is owned by and is a Planted Ancient Woodland (or PAW). This means, it is ancient woodland that has been planted with nurseries of fir and other commercial wood crops for harvesting at a later date. By buying this woodland, we have been able to protect the whole area from clearance planned by the Forestry Commission.

You are likely to see a wide variety of animals and certainly plants during you stay from tawny owls to wag tails, to swallows, hawks, sparrows, woodpeckers to name just a few. We hold the Green Dragon Environmental Standard award.

Accommodation Reviews

We invite every traveller who books a holiday via us to send in a review. Because we don't run the holidays they're completely independent and unedited... remember to read between the lines though, as two people on the same holiday can have different views!
