Luxury self catering accommodation in Devon, England
How this holiday makes a difference
Environment
We train employees within their working practices, ensuring reduced impact in all areas. We educate guests in the sound understanding of environmental impact and reduction. We comply with relevant environmental legislation and implement systems and procedures to assure compliance and monitor our environmental action plan at the quarterly Health & Safety meetings.
We recycle 90% of weekly rubbish, and we compost what ever we can. We are involved with the Opt out scheme, working with The Calvert Trust. We also work with DWT trust creating a wildlife haven – and have been awarded a grant for this. We reuse items on the estate where ever possible. We have a tree planting and land management plan to offset your holiday in Devon.
Our future plans include harvesting rain water (pipes already installed in bathrooms) to supply toilets in our apartments, to produce a help sheet about being eco friendly and to arrange a visit for the Devon Wildlife Trust to assess natural habitats and how to protect them.
We offer a 15% discount to guests arriving by train with free collection and drop off. Local station Umberleigh on the Tarka line from Exeter.
The Cottages were crowned Self Catering and Serviced Apartment of the Year at the 2010 Devon Tourism Awards. Aside from winning their category in the Devon Tourism Awards, they also have 5 gold stars from Visit Britain and have also been awarded Gold from Green Tourism for their commitment to the environment, with the installation of a wind turbine, PV panels and a successful recycling policy. The cottages have won Gold for the Self-catering & Serviced Apartment of the year category at the South West Tourism Excellence Awards 2010-2011.
Community
Our cleaners, craftsmen and office staff all live within walking distance of the accommodation. We buy local produce for our welcome hampers. We promote local businesses heavily – pubs, shops, restaurants and massage. Roger offers Exmoor and North Devon tours and fishing lessons here or on the local river Taw.
