Opened in 1989, the hotel was built on an ecological concept; the intention to offer a typically local experience to travellers, was realised in restoring to it's original form Arab houses furnished entirely with antiquities found on site.
We have handed over all activities and transport outside of our walls to the local fishermen and boatsmen. We buy over 80% of our raw products on the island and also have a farm which produces some of our fruit and vegetables for the hotel. Our staff are 100% local and trained by us.
The waste produced here is kept to a minimum and we never buy canned food, rather fresh produce. Organic waste is taken daily to the farm by 2 donkeys, to be composted and the remaining waste is managed by the dump financed by the Shela hoteliers through SERG (the Shela Environmental Resident Group).
Lamu does not have sewers and our waste water from the kitchen is degreased and clarified before going to a 'puits a perdre'. All toilets are fitted with septic tanks and laundry water is clarified before ending up in the 'puits a perdre'.
Our hot water is produced by solar energy, all our lights are energy saving and we don't have air conditioning in order not to overload the local energy grid. We plant on average 1500 trees per year and maintain a nursery which produces about 500 palm trees of different species per season.

We invite every traveller who books a holiday via us to send in a review. Because we don't run the holidays they're completely independent and unedited... remember to read between the lines though, as two people on the same holiday can have different views!
