Esperance accommodation in Western Australia
How this holiday makes a difference
Environment
Water Storage
Water is the most valuable resource on Woody Island and all building roofs collect rainwater that drains to a lower central tank. From there the water is pumped up to 4 x 100,000 litre water storage tanks that supply mains pressure water to the Island. This has meant water saving devices such as AAA showerheads and low water dual flush toilets (replaced in existing ablution block) can now be used. The system can also be automated to allow the winter rains to be pumped unattended.
Composting Toilets
All new toilets are composting units that are proving to be very successful with almost nil water usage. Worms and sawdust are replaced at regular intervals. Existing cistern toilets have been replaced with dual flush systems to minimise water usage.
Waste Management
All recyclable waste products eg aluminium cans and glass are separated and recycled to the mainland for disposal. Non-recyclable waste products, ie general rubbish, are removed to the mainland in wheelie bins on the daily ferry.
Solar Power
Renewable power is the primary source of providing electricity to Woody Island. In 2001, 48 solar panels, 27 collector batteries and an inverter were installed to supply 24 hour power. This solar power provides approximately 80% of the required power to Woody Island. During the peak season when the demand outweighs the solar supply, a 20KVA generator is used to supplement the renewable energy.
Revegetation
An active revegetation program continues to ensure areas such as the Visitor Centre are regenerated as quickly as possible. An ongoing annual tree-planting program continues with only trees native to Woody Island being planted. No introduced species such as palms are permitted or planted. Grey water is collected and used to irrigate the revegetation areas. All strategies are designed to minimise impact in the natural environment and provide an ecologically and environmentally sustainable enterprise.
Conservation Information
All guests are given fact sheets with information about the conservation of Woody Island as an A-class natural reserve.
Community
Being part of smaller community, we support many sporting group/charities and fundraisers with donations. We also support many environmental groups that come to Woody Island for research and education, such as:
School Groups: (Snorkeling trips, Outdoor Education Camp, Leadership Camps
Bushrangers: work alongside Department of Conservation and land management to help maintain Woody Island trails.
Conservation Council: monitor the fairy penguins found on the eastern side of the island and also the fleshy footed shearwater colonies.
SW Birding Group: come to view rare bird species that are only found in limited areas of Australia.
The majority of our employees are local and have a broad knowledge of the Esperance region. We train all of our staff. We also use fresh local produce for all catering purposes.
