Everyone involved in the running of the house and its facilities is local. Local trades people were used to restore the house and for its maintenance. 2 - 3 people are employed to maintain the house thereby creating well needed jobs. The produce we use is all local and from local farmers. We provide details of where guests can buy local produce as well as details of local shops and services. We always use local services and tradespeople such as builders, electricians and plumbers and ensure that we remain loyal to those people who provide excellent service from the local community
We encourage guests to visit local attractions, eat in local restaurants and buy local produce by leaving them detailed information for them to make this as easy as possible. With regard to transport I recommend the car hire companies that use the least emissions with their cars and I advise them on local bus services and leave numbers for local taxi firms.
The house has been constructed using the traditional method of building with mud and stones with very thick walls then using a simple lime wash. When you build like this it keeps the house cool in the summer but mud does warm up with the sun so in the evening when the temperature goes down pretty quick, so it still retains the warmth.
We don’t use any air con in the house you just don’t need to! We don’t really use heating in the winter although if things get really cold we just pile on more clothes. The houses originally were built with the sun in mind and strategically placed. Originally the windows were built so you would get the sun into the house from the morning till the evening!
All our cleaning products are environmentally friendly. I am using Earth Friendly brand products. There are very little eco products in the Canaries so I am trying to import them and educate people on how to use them. It’s a hard slog but I am committed! We use these products in guests’ rooms and all other areas of the house. We also use eco washing up liquid and Earth Friendly brand washing powder for laundry.
We use energy efficient light bulbs throughout the property. We have recycling for glass and paper which is collected weekly and provide separate bins for guests to separate recycling, therefore encouraging guests to recycle. I run a virtually paper free office and although I don’t have a policy on this I don’t buy paper and any paper used is recycled.
We invite every traveller who books a holiday via us to send in a review. Because we don't run the holidays they're completely independent and unedited... remember to read between the lines though, as two people on the same holiday can have different views!
