Life on the farm began in mud huts with thatched roofs. The present construction has been undertaken using local material and workmanship to blend with the environment. The Homestead is surrounded by the Corbett National Park which is a reserved forest where a large number of wild animals can be found, including the legendary Royal Bengal Tiger.
All the staff employed at the Homestead are youth from the Kumaon area of the state. Being employed in the Homestead not only provides a constant source of income but also helps them to improve their vocational skills. Guests who have an interest in tribal life are taken to local Buxa and Tharu villages, which are ‘Vana Gujjar’ settlements deep in the forest. ‘Vana Gujjars’ were the earliest known settlers of the area.
The hosts run a knitting centre for women, where women of the area are taught and provided with designs and material. All the proceeds from this go to their betterment. The Puri’s run a handicraft store within their homestay for guests to purchase the locally produced handicrafts. All the proceeds from the sale go towards the betterment of the local women. They annually provide the Leprosy Home in Ramnagar with produce from their farm. The hosts also support all the children on the Farm by taking care of their education, medical aid and wedding expenses
Most of the vegetables consumed in the homestay are produced in the homestays’ farm and are grown organically and under hygienic conditions. Similarly, dairy products are sourced from the homestays’ free range farm. The Homestead only uses natural pesticides and compost manure produced from waste from the kitchen and the yard.
Environment
The Puri’s only use energy conserving CFL & LED bulbs and all equipment is kept on standby when not in use. The Homestead is situated in a water surplus area and the entire water requirement in the homestay, including water for the swimming pool, is fulfilled from the sustainably managed water well in the homestay. Great care is taken not to pollute the underground water reservoir and only Neem & Soapstone (naturally occurring) detergents are used.
The hosts are members of Save the Tiger Project and love to share with their guests their great knowledge of the local ecosystem.

We invite every traveller who books a holiday via us to send in a review. Because we don't run the holidays they're completely independent and unedited... remember to read between the lines though, as two people on the same holiday can have different views!
