Koh Lanta luxury resort, Thailand
How this holiday makes a difference
Environment
We have a number of environmental initiatives at the resort that aim to minimise the environmental impact of the resort on the natural ecosystems of the island. We have a written specific Environmental Policy for the resort and its practices. We recycle all sewage for garden irrigation after treatment and separate and sell plastic, tin and cardboard wastes.
We support Green Fins (an organisation aiming to protect and conserve coral reefs by establishing and implementing environmentally friendly guidelines to promote a sustainable diving tourism industry) in community rubbish clean ups in both cash and manpower.
We clean up our beaches and collect all rubbish daily, and compost garden waste. We have timers on garden lighting and on decorative fountains, and we also turn off air-con and hot water heating in vacant rooms (low season). We make sure to minimise laundry (notices in guestrooms) and have identified all light bulbs that are suitable for changing to low energy, and have changed them to 100% already.
We check our thermostats to ensure they are not set too high and maintain our air-cons to ensure they are energy efficient at all times.
Community
We support the local community and buy food locally where possible. We source our services locally (rent motorbikes, rent minivans, use local electrical shop), and are regularly involved in sponsoring Lanta Lanta Festival (Traditional culture festival yearly on the island) - providing free transport for our guests to attend the festival.
We recruit staff locally (we employ people from Koh Lanta), and accept trainees preferentially from southern universities. We subscribe to the code of protection of children from exploitation and prostitution in tourism.
