If you’re looking for a simple, comfortable home as a base for your responsible travel holiday this beach house is the perfect place to start.
Known as “Your Aquatic Playground”, the Rockingham area promises an endless wealth of low and no impact nature based, outdoor and water activities. Holiday makers can see the world’s smallest penguins on the recently opened viewing facility on Penguin Island, dive off one of the many neighbouring islands or explore the underwater plane and boat wrecks, sail a yacht within the protected bays, get involved in recreational boat and jetty fishing, get adventurous with kite surfing, wind surfing or parasaliling, enjoy the vast stretches of white sandy beaches, take in a leisurely heritage trail, or swim with the wild dolphins which inhabit the local bays.
The property is run in a way which is designed to take maximum advantage of local trades people, professionals and suppliers. We’re also focusing on lowering carbon emissions from the Beach House.
The property incorporates the following features contributing to minimising our impact on the environment:
Waste reduction
Our local council has an excellent recycling program so we provide guests with two bins inside and full information about how the council works the system. We have also purchased a second council recycling bin so we can easily handle the volume of recycling guests produce<.
Conserving water
The house is fitted throughout with water saving shower heads and flow control taps.
Conserving electricity
We have chosen not to install air conditioning or a clothes dryer, relying rather on fans and clothes lines. The house is also very well insulated with excellent ventilation throughout. Water is heated using a solar system with gas back up. The stove and heaters are all gas.
Encouraging wildlife
We have a bird feeder and provide seed for guests so they can check out the antics of the gorgeous local bird life from one of the private courtyards.
Organic gardening practices
Environmental cleaning products
We choose environmentally friendly cleaning products where possible as well as environmentally friendly pest control like diluted oil of cloves for spider control for example.
Measures to educate staff & guests about your environmental practices
We clearly state our desire to keep the Beach House’s policy of reducing our carbon footprint on our website and encourage our guests to join us with information on the website and in the on- site information folder.
Office practices
Well we don’t even have an office, I work from home on my sailing boat which is moored locally and powered by wind and solar energy. I don’t have a printer either, so only ever print out hard copies of documents at my local library if I just can’t do the job electronically. I even row ashore when I need to, so don’t use a petrol run outboard. Additionally, we encourage all our guests to behave in an environmentally friendly way.
We endeavour to always employ local trade people, professionals and suppliers. Our regular cleaner, caretaker and lawn mowing service are all local residents. We only source supplies from outside the local area if they’re not locally available. There is a basket of constantly updated information brochures of where guests can spend their time and money locally including restaurants and activities.
