Central Andros Island beach resort, Bahamas: the story of this holiday company
Dick Birch brought his wife and three children to Andros Island in 1960. He immediately loved with the island started Small Hope Bay Lodge. The area was named after Captain Henry Morgan, the famous pirate supposedly hid his treasure near the bay and said "there is Small Hope of anyone finding it". The family has continued to grow and still own and operate the resort today. Since the beginning of Small Hope, we have been a resort with a focus on diving, fishing, relaxing and family.
Responsible tourism: Central Andros Island beach resort, Bahamas
We are one of the few hotels in the Bahamas that has a formal Environmental Management System in place. We recycle our wine bottles by making cocktail glasses, and recycle our other bottles and cans via a "Cans for Kids" recycling program in Nassau. We collect composte which is used to beautify our grounds and send our ink jet cartridges to Florida for recycling. We are always looking for ways to help save this beautiful island.
We support ANCAT (The Andros Conservancy and Trust) which is responsible for establishing the largest national park in the Bahamas, part of which is right off the coast line of the Lodge. The Andros Park is both marine and terrestrial preserving our reef system, mangrove areas, and land crab breeding grounds. Several staff members of are on the board of ANCAT and we do their website free of charge. We have always been active in the community.
We are active supporters of Junior Achievement, an organization to educate and inspire youths showing how free enterprise, business and economics can improve the quality of their lives.
Small Hope Bay Lodge has always maintained a commitment to support the local community. In 1973, the Birch family started Androsia, the local Batik factory. Androsia supplies beautiful clothing and fabrics to many Bahamian companies, including Small Hope Bay Lodge. It continues to be completely Bahamian owned and operated and is a continual source of employment and contributor the the local Androsian and greater Bahamian communities.
We also assist local schools by taking students on as interns for programs about the hospitality business and culinary arts. The students have the potential for becoming full-time employees of the resort after comlpleting high school.
Small Hope Bay Lodge is also a supporter of ANCAT (Andros Conservancy and Trust) which helps organize clean ups of local areas and resources as well as organizing Humane Society visits to assist Andros in spaying and neutering the local pets.
Small Hope is committed to supporting and educating the community. We have developed programs for training our staff to swim, snorkel and scuba dive.
