How this holiday makes a difference

Environment

For some years now, we have consciously adopted a policy of eco-farming techniques, which avoids use of pesticides & encourages use of organic fertilisers, planting shrubs which attract butterflies, avoiding use of plastic bags at the Villa itself. We have started our own protected hatcheries for the backwater turtles, which find a ready refuge behind our house in the 2 large ponds which keeps them safe from poachers.

Community

We believe in taking the local community along in the practice of tourism – be it employment, procuring of fresh produce or community participation. The tourists very often are made welcome by the local people and the interaction between them is often mutually beneficial.

We extensively employ local community members for guiding the tourists, local boatmen for taking the tourists around the vast backwaters (which is a major attraction here) and procure vegetables, fish & poultry from the neighbouring houses. This has helped the local communities be pleasantly disposed to the tourists arriving here & many have written about this particular aspect of their stay.

The staff are local boatmen & in the best traditions of eco-tourism are able to make a decent living from these boats, which use an eco-friendly method of waste water disposal.

The guests can donate clothing, medicines etc. to local schools or charities. By visiting the local markets, shops etc. and buying handicrafts, the guests will help the local people to earn a living.

We give opportunity to see the lifestyles of local people living along the large sections of the backwaters of Kerala. At the time of halts in between to stretch your legs on the shore, visiting the ancient temples, churches, local villages & people, plus try the floating markets, duck rearing or take in a quick bottle of fresh sweet toddy from a local pub.

From All these places Guests can buy things which help the local community for their living. The staffs in our Houseboats are Local peoples. We Buys Fish verities like Pearl Spot, Lobsters , etc, from the Local fishermen, so we help them an earning to live.

Backwaters house boat cruise in Kerala, India

Reviewed 27 Dec 2007 by Barbara Jefferis4 star rating

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Sitting on the water's edge watching the boats go by in front of the house was wonderful. Similarly being quietly rowed through the backwaters in a small canoe, seeing the life of the local (human and animal!) residents was truly memorable. It was all heightened after dark: we arrived at the accommodation after sunset and gliding across the backwaters in a canoe under the stars listening to the temple music was enchanting.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

The family's house itself was a beautiful traditional house and is set in a most tranquil environment with beautiful gardens. So come to relax; bring some mosquito repellent and a good book to read! Also make sure that you call ahead so they can collect you in a car from Alleppey town centre when you arrive.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

I hope that it did. The water was heated by solar panel and the canoe was paddled rather than motorised. Also there were several people employed to help the family to produce delicious meals (a real highlight), as well as the boatman and the driver.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

We were warmly welcomed and treated very well indeed by the family. They have set up a beautiful homestay in their historic family home and I would highly recommend this relaxing spot to anyone wanting to experience the backwaters from the luxury of a beautiful home where you can enjoy excellent home cooking.
