How this holiday makes a difference

We own and run this family hotel. Tourism development in our locality had a positive impact on the local economy. It has broadened the horizons of the locals thus giving them the incentive to stay around and not to go off to Mainland Greece to seek employment.

It also encourages local people to take an interest, develop the nature trails and work on the land; it gives them a greater pride in the countryside around the village while at the same time giving them ideas on how they can demonstrate their skills, as well as giving them the ability to mix with people from many walks of life and from all over the world.

The local community is central to our success in supporting our business and help in servicing the needs of our clients. We employ local people, use local suppliers and products. We provide a detailed guide for our guests to make the most of the local area and tavernas. By being successful in our business, we can demonstrate to the world the beauty of the area and enhance our local community with its traditions, customs and values.

We operate our own environmental policy. We encourage guests to use energy efficiently and keep water consumption to a minimum. Lights in communal areas operate on sensors and the water is heated via solar panels (for about 9 months yearly) thus further reducing energy consumption. Vegetable and garden matter is composted and bottles from the bar are returned to the original supplier. We use environmentally friendly cleaning products.

Apart from our small orchard fronting the property we have landscaped one quarter of our site with recycled local stone creating terraces at the back of the buildings which are productively planted according to local traditions with orange, lemon, apricot, peach, plum, quince nectarine, fig, olive, almond trees, vines and various flowering plants and herbs. Our clients are welcome to use the terraces for gathering fruit when it is available or simply relaxing. We are using natural water resources for irrigation – our own well.

No chemicals are added to the land so the produce is organic. Water is recycled for the garden and waste biologically degrades and soaks away. Our cats are quite friendly and part of the scene, while they roam in the grounds.

Lesvos holiday accommodation, Greece

Reviewed 24 Aug 2007 by Emily Hunka4 star rating

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Just being able to completely relax and read and enjoy ourselves. The sea is beautiful and clear. The whole atmosphere of the place is very chilled. Batteries definitely fully recharged.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Vatera, Lesvos is a place to go if you want a completely chilled 'do nothing' kind of holiday (which we did). It was perfect for our needs because it enabled us to wind down, read a lot, swim a lot, and not a lot else. If you like a holiday with things to do or lots of exploring then it might be a bit quiet for you, or you would need to hire a car. One of its virtues is that it's not a package holiday destination. Almost everyone except us is Greek, but if you like a holiday with easy access to nightlife, lots of amenities, and so on, this may not be for you. If you want an authentic experience, it's a great place to go. Self-catering was definitely an advantage. This accommodation where we stayed was very good indeed. Simple, pretty surroundings and yet had everything you need, great view and Dimitra and Vaios, the owners are excellent, helpful and friendly hosts.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Yes in terms of the biological sewage system and solar powered and energy-saving light bulbs everywhere. There didn't seem to be recycling though. It's not a package destination, so you really feel that everything is geared to the locality.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

We had a really lovely holiday that was suited exactly to our needs. I would have no hesitation in recommending this holiday to anyone!

Read the operator's response here:

My husband Vaios & I we thank Emily for her kind words and warm recommendations. The only comments we wish to make is that Vatera can be the base for more energetic pursuits (walking, bird watching , botany etc) other than worshiping the three S's - Sand , sun & sea...but these are more appropriate for the Spring & Autumn months. We have already published in 2004 a small walking guide for the area "Vatera Around & About " and currently we are writing up more Notes on new walks in the area with detailed instructions, maps, schematics & GPS readings. Also a bird watching book for the area is in the making.

In the area of relaxation & chilling out we are in the process of organising YOGA workshops for June & early July 2008 - More on that later. As regards to lack of recycling at our place, sadly it is not by choice. The Local Authority does not have facilities for recycling. We do our best to minimise impacts to the environment within local limitations. Our gardens are organic.
