How Tuscany bed & breakfast accommodation makes a difference

We are committed to being a good steward of the land and the surrounding community. By farming organically, recycling, using renewable resources for utility needs when possible, and encouraging our guests to be conscious of their resource usage, we protect our land from non-sustainable use.

By supporting local artisanal producers, providing a supportive workplace for our employees, and encouraging our guests to be sensitive to local culture, and opening our property for public use on hiking trails, we benefit the local community in many ways that traditional hotels are not able to.

We aspire to be a vacation destination that provides an opportunity for guests to be engaged, to participate in our community, to learn about sustainability, and take that knowledge home and apply it to their own community.

Bed and Breakfast guests have an opportunity to stay right in the heart of the activity plus they get to stay in a facility that has a self-contained heating and hot water system that only uses sustainably harvested wood from the property. They also get to sample some of our best organic products at breakfast – honey, farro, breads made with Spannocchia whole wheat, and jams and jellies made from our figs, plums, and persimmons. What we don’t produce on site, we try to buy locally.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Staying five days at the farm with my husband - taking a cooking class together, meeting new people at the dinning area, getting a tour of the organic vegetable gardens, seeing the animals on the farm, hiking up to the ruins/castle, and eating the delicious foods offered at the farm.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

We rented a car in the Tuscany area and enjoyed every minute of our travels - most people discouraged us from driving - I found it enjoyable and not as scary as people led us to believe. It allowed us to see more sites from the farm - otherwise we would have felt more isolated.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Yes - using responsible travel - we were able to see places that were less travelled - used organic products and were recycling and using energy efficient products.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Excellent - the best for both of us.

My holiday at Spannocchia in Tuscany was fantastic. One of the best holidays I've had for a long time. It's a really inspiring place and we met some lovely people.

The best part was undoubtedly the food. Practically everything on your plate comes from the estate, whether it be pork from their rare breed pigs or wild boar, vegetables from the garden or olive oil from the olive groves.

I'd recommend hiring a car to other travellers as the estate is rather isolated and it allows you to get to know the area and visit the various surrounding hilltop villages.

You definitely feel that the holiday benefits the local people. Opening the estate up to guests enables the Spannochia Foundation to realise their other core projects such as animal husbandry and organic gardening, all of which requires the expertise of the local people employed on the estate. The estate is dedicated to sustainable agricultural farming methods so this along with their reed bed drainage system is proof of their respect for the environment.
