How this holiday makes a difference

The lodge’s self-imposed environmental and natural resource conservation is the main emphasis of our operation. The forest and trees in the lodge areas are well protected, and they provide good habitat for small wildlife animals, especially more than 30 species of birds.

We also recycle and reuse of materials wherever possible, reduce garbage quantity through the use of more permanent utensils, use renewable energy such as solar power and reduce water consumption.

Our excursion activities offered to guests contribute directly and indirectly to local communities visited. This includes direct contribution to community’s revolving fund (rice bank) in the participating villages, and other forms of income generation to the villagers (e.g. lodging fee for the host family, sales of handcraft, hiring village guide).

During the course of excursion, the lodge promotes better understanding/cultural exchange between guests and the host villagers. We believe that this can reduce the negative impact to local societies and raise awareness of both villagers and visitors.

Ecolodge accommodation in Cambodia

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The sunsets from the lodge were quite spectacular! It is a very peaceful and secluded place, somewhere I could certainly have stayed longer.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Spending a day at the lake is a must - try to go early in the day as it can get more crowded as the day goes on. It is a place for rest, relaxation and recreation and the walk there from the lodge is pleasant. Stopping off at the Norden guesthouse for lunch on the way back is also very good (quite a lot more expensive than the lodge) for a change with good Scandinavian (of all things) food.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

The lodge has been very sensitively laid out with a good balance of clearly marked paths to the various parts of the lodge, without interfering with the natural flow of the environment. The use of a generator and solar power at different times and the notification to conserve power would have minimised the negative effects on the environment. Having cold water in the rooms and hot shower rooms are also a good idea - however it might be useful to let people know that these hot shower rooms exist (only discovered on 2nd day). The lodge was staffed by friendly staff, some of whom appeared to be drawn from the neighbouring community. In addition there were advertisements for local guides so I do think that there would be some small benefit to the local community.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

I had a wonderful time away from Phnom Penh and chilling with friends in a part of Cambodia that I had not yet visited. The two places I stayed were very different from one another but both had their charm and certainly contributed to my increased levels of relaxation.
