This lodge is a community-based project. This means that it is set up for the purpose of improving the living standards of the local people and for realizing initiatives based on micro credit. We have 16 employees from the local community which means 250 people benefit.
Through various activities and generous donations we have been able to realise several projects including the sinking of a well with pump and purification system. Availability of fresh water meant that the Borana people could settle and they have since cultivated 5 hectares of land.
Lots of the Borana children go to a school that is located near our lodge. The construction of this school is terrible; it has no floor and the walls are in desperate conditions. At this moment there a fundraise campaign in the Netherlands to build a new school. We have already collected a reasonable amount of money but certainly more is needed.
Our lodge operates on an eco-friendly basis and supports the principles of sustainable tourism and ecotourism; environment and cultural orientated travel. Products used in the kitchen are either grown in our own garden or obtained from trusted suppliers, and waste is made into compost.
The pool uses water from our own well which has mineral qualities. The filter system sees to recycling of the water, therefore there is no unnecessary stress on the ground water level. Wastewater is purified in septic tanks before being returned to the ground. In building of the complex natural local materials were used; hundreds of trees of been planted to compensate for the use of timber in the construction of the hotel.
This holiday is part of the responsibletravel.com and Conservation International Community Based Tourism Programme to support and promote community based tourism ventures that offer significant conservation and development benefits to local communities.

We invite every traveller who books a holiday via us to send in a review. Because we don't run the holidays they're completely independent and unedited... remember to read between the lines though, as two people on the same holiday can have different views!
