How this holiday makes a difference

We have been accredited with a Gold Award by The Green Tourism Business Scheme (GTBS) for Scottish tourism businesses, launched in 1998, and run by Quality Assurance at the Scottish Tourist Board. The scheme helps tourism businesses save money by improving their environmental performance and helps protect Scotland's stunning environment.

We are committed to environmental management of our resources through re-cycling, energy and water conservation, restriction of waste and noxious matters, screening of all our suppliers and trades. Here are a selection of the activities that we undertake;

Recycling Separation of paper, cans and glass waste and deposit at re-cycling centers, Encouraging guests to return unused leaflets, Old furniture etc to Elvon for re-use in community, Switching to small pots for butter, jam and marmalade in d/room saving on packaging.

Energy conservation Timers to cut down lights in public areas only when needed, Use of long life low energy bulbs, Thermostats inside hot water tanks adjusted so heat output is not too high, Showers in all ensuites instead of baths cut down energy (and water) requirements.

Garden Planted out for birds and other creatures (Denser bushes to give cover for birds and butterflies), Composting of waste materials, Bird table and bird feeding and water (particularly in Winter) for drinking and baths.

Water and waste Use of hippos in all toilets, Use of environmentally friendly cleaning agents to cut down harmful wastes to mains, Use of "wipeable" overcovers for tablecloths to cut down laundering.

General Provision of menu choices on eve of breakfasts dramatically reduced food waste since exact quantities known for keeping fresh and control of preparation, All furniture purchased chosen for wood from sustainable forests, Extensive use of internet as advertising medium reducing dramatically on paperwork re bookings etc (e.g. two or three letters from us answering enquiry, confirming dates and confirming booking together with similar number for client now dealt with electronically by exchange of a set of e-mails).

Information and guest participation Clients are made aware of environmental involvement and invited to participate ( re-use of towels, comments invited, separation of waste etc..), We offer details of shared transport options from airport, Cycle hire details available along with details of local public transport info including bus map.

My friend and I recently stayed at the guest house in Joppa outside of the Ediburgh city center. It was a very pleasant experience. The owners were very friendly and I would highly recommend it to anyone else interested in staying in that area. Travel from the guest house into the city center was easy, and the beach at the end of the street was wonderful. The morning breakfasts were a treat especially since they were accompanied by conversations with cheery Mac and the other guests.

We invite every traveller who books a holiday via us to send in a review. Because we don't run the holidays they're completely independent and unedited... remember to read between the lines though, as two people on the same holiday can have different views!
