How this holiday makes a difference

Those who venture away from the popular tourist spots of and head inland, even by just a few kilometres, will be rewarded with an insight into a traditional lifestyle that many tourists will never witness in the resorts and coastal areas of the Algarve. Many of the people living in these rural areas are the most humble and dignified people you would ever wish to meet, uncorrupted by the social distortions wrought by the tourist industry on the coast.

By booking a holiday at our Algarve family accommodation we hope that you can play a part in preserving this rural environment, by sustaining employment and encouraging regeneration in the rural Algarve.

Help us to support and preserve these rural communities by practising 'Responsible Tourism'. Depopulation has been a feature of the rural Algarve for decades. By encouraging visitors inland, away from the overdeveloped stretches of the Algarve coastline, we hope we can play a part in assisting the local economy, and spread the word about this wonderful region.

Where possible everything for the farm is bought locally and we encourage our guests to shop locally and visit local family-run businesses such as village restaurants, bars & shops. We also provide a guide to help guests find ceramics, artwork & natural cosmetics made by local artisans in the hope that they will purchase these locally produced items as souvenirs or gifts.

We would never dictate to our guests where they should or should not visit, but rather try to draw their attention to smaller, less commercial projects that we feel benefit the local area and community, such as a conservation project protecting critically endangered species. Few tourists to the Algarve manage to experience 'festas'. We help guests to locate both traditional & modern festivals taking place across the Algarve.

We've lots of lovely salvaged buiding materials and used local stone to build dry stone retaining walls. We restored the old houses that were already on the land, rather than pull them down to build new. Our houses are fitted with solar panels which generate enough hot water for bathing & washing-up throughout our rental season.

Our swimming pool is fitted with a salt water filtration system which removes the need for chlorine. Water is provided from a bore hole and 'brown' water is collected in a filtration tank and reused for garden irrigation.

We have 5 hectares of conservation grade farmland which we farm organically. We produce tropical fruit, olives and grapes for wine. Much of this produce is traded with a neighbouring farmer in exchange for his produce.

To our knowledge we are the only family accommodation in the Algarve to actively welcome families who have children with learning difficulties, autism & behavioural problems.

Lovely holiday - the houses and their very private gardens are beautiful, with all the space, style and generous amounts of practical kit (crockery etc) plus we loved the books and toys. Had great times by the pool, lazy lunches then trips to the beautiful beaches near Lagoa.(read full review)
